Detroit shipyard's new tug will have a pulling capacity of 80 tons and a 6% reduction in gas emissions
It was launched yesterday, Tuesday, the 14th, by the Detroit Shipyard, its new mechanical hybrid tug and the first ever built in the Americas. Detroit shipyard's plan is to reduce gas emissions by up to 6% when compared to a conventional tugboat, according to the website Portos e Navios.
The tugboat was manufactured with resources from the FMM (Merchant Marine Fund) and also had the BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) as a transfer agent.
Having a towing capacity of 80 tons, the Detroit shipyard tug also has propellers supplied by Schottel and a hybrid system by MTU. According to the shipyard's project manager, Marcelo Rampelotti, the hybrid system installed on the tug has an additional series on the shaft that connects the thrusters on both sides.

According to Marcelo: “This allows the vessel to keep one of the main engines off during navigation, on short trips or in some specific maneuvers, such as fighting external fires, thus saving consumption. of fuels and operating hours of the engines, in addition to reducing emissions”.
More Tugs Made by Detroit Shipyard
In 2022, Detroit Brasil also inaugurated in the market, at the International Tug and Salvage Convention (ITS), in Istanbul (Turkey), the line of tugboats called 'Detroit Green Line', which has solutions focused on reducing emissions from greenhouse gases.
The Shipyard also points out that the Starnav Lynx is the first tug delivered and also the first from Green Line. According to the manager, this series has 4 vessels, being that 3 will be prepploughs for the installation of the hybrid system and 1 will leave the shipyard with a 100% operational system. The tug had Declivone Alencar Antunes Dias as its “godmother”.
