The plans for the future of automotive companies have green hydrogen as their horizon. That is why all initiatives and technological advances focus on generating greater yield and efficiency for replace fossil fuels. In this context, the company Bosch plans to launch its 563 HP hydrogen engine this year.

Car companies are competing to lead the market with vehicles that offer comfort, speed and power without carbon emissions. In turn, Toyota, BMW and Honda already have battery-electric, hydrogen and gasoline hybrid models.

Now, the Bosch brand, together with Ligier, are working on the launch, towards the end of this 2024, of the Ligier JS2 RH, a hydrogen engine prototype with a higher power than the previous model, the Ligier JS2 R, with a twin-turbo V6 engine of 3.0 liters. Here you can get more information.

This revolutionary innovation presented at this year's CES aims to consolidate the hydrogen engine for the future as an excellent alternative to the combustion of fossil resources, surpassing conventional and zero-emission engines in power and resistance.

Background to the 3.0 hydrogen engine

Automotive projects based on hydrogen engines have been surpassing themselves year after year. At the beginning of this century, BMW was one of the pioneers when it launched the 750hL, 7 series on the market with a V12 engine with gasoline or hydrogen combustion and unique engineering.

This fleet of vehicles offered a hydrogen range of up to 400 km and could then continue on gasoline. However, it was not as successful due to the difficulty of finding a fueling station that offered both services, coupled with the high cost of the vehicle.

Fortunately, twenty years later, we can now see electric cars on the roads and cities, with hydrogen engine and hybrids with gasoline, and a greater number of fueling stations suitable for each type of demand were added.

Bosch and Ligier revolutionize the track

The joint project between Bosch Engineering and Ligier Automotive now consists of launching a prototype based on the Ligier JS2 R competition, presented last year for the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This innovation optimizes the previous model by offering 240 HP more than gasoline engines and those responsible for the project claim that with this prototype they intend to demonstrate that the hydrogen engine can be as or more competitive using sustainable energy.

Ligier president Jacques Nicolet stated that the prototype's biggest challenge was maintaining balanced, uninterrupted combustion without pre-ignition in a situation of constant demand and at high revs as expected in a sports race.

Future outlook for the hydrogen engine

According to the CEO of the German giant, projects for the near future find them working on a hydrogen engine capable of transforming fuel directly into energy without the need for prior conversion into electricity.

This innovation could be available in the short term, while, in parallel, the necessary structures to supply fuel for the hydrogen engine begin and there are more filling stations within reach of the consumer.

Meanwhile, the competition is still in the hands of electric and hybrid engines with gasoline and hydrogen, which are the most reliable answers to replacing carbon emissions. Having proven its efficiency on the tracks, it is expected that the hydrogen engine will be produced on a large scale in parallel with the increase in green energy sources.
