Innovative renewable energy project promises to supply 600 homes and create thousands of jobs in the region
According to elektrek, New York is about to make history in the area of renewable energy with the start of construction of Sunrise Wind, the biggest country's offshore wind farm. Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, this project represents a significant milestone in the fight against climate change and the promotion of clean energy sources.
A big step towards renewable energy
Sunrise Wind, located approximately 30 miles east of Montauk Point, Long Island, will have the ability to 924 megawatts (MW). This immense wind farm will generate enough energy to supply approximately 600 thousand homes in New York. The governor Hochul highlighted the importance of the project, stating that it symbolizes tremendous progress for the state in its mission to combat climate change. “By initiating Sunrise Wind and advancing the next wave of offshore wind projects, New York is experiencing a tremendous milestone in combating climate change,” said Hochul.
Project details and partnerships
After obtaining the final license from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) from the US Department of the Interior, the project is ready to move forward. The permitted construction and operation plan details one nautical mile spacing between wind turbines, as well as including mitigation measures for protect marine habitats and species.
- China created the 'unbreakable' wind turbine — but it broke
- The price of energy in Germany has soared to R$5.864/MWh due to the dunkelflaute, the terror of renewables, while the average cost in Brazil is around R$600/MWh
- PUC-Rio at the forefront of innovation! New revolutionary method for green hydrogen, with unprecedented materials, promises clean, safe and ecological energy, leading the race for global sustainability!
- Offshore electricity: Project with incentive for COAL in Brazil could cost R$595 billion and increase electricity bills by 11%
Initially a partnership 50-50 between Ørsted and Eversource, the project is now fully controlled by Ørsted, which acquired Eversource's stake for 78 million U.S. $. The Sunrise Wind team will intensify work on the onshore transmission system, while offshore construction will begin later this year at the project site.
Economic and social benefits
Sunrise Wind will not only promote renewable energy but also boost the local economy. The project will create 800 direct jobs in New York and thousands of indirect jobs. John R. Durso, President of the Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, highlighted the importance of the jobs created: “Hundreds of local union men and women will have well-paying jobs building Sunrise Wind onshore and offshore. Moving this project forward will help fuel our grid and our regional economy.”
Furthermore, the offshore power export cable will reach the Smith Point County Park em Brookhaven, New York, and a new converter station and an expanded existing substation will be installed in Holbrook, New York.
Contribution to environmental goals
The project is an integral part of the effort to New York to achieve its mandate of 70% renewable electricity by 2030. Sunrise Wind has finalized its agreements with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) on a 25-year offshore wind renewable energy certificate (OREC) agreement.
The project initially canceled its contract from New York's first offshore wind tender in 2019, but reached viable power purchase agreements in New York. fourth offshore wind tender in the state in February this year. This advancement demonstrates New York's ongoing commitment to renewable energy and its leadership role in the fight against climate change.
A sustainable future
The construction of Sunrise Wind is a shining example of how innovation and determination can transform a region's energy future. With the ability to generate clean energy for hundreds of thousands of homes and create a significant number of jobs, This project shows that a sustainable future is not only possible, but also beneficial for the economy and society.
As construction progresses, New York continues to lead the way in adopting renewable energy technologies, paving the way for a healthier planet and a brighter future for all. So keep an eye on Sunrise Wind – it promises to be a real “wind of change” for renewable energy in the United States.
