Brazil has the largest crystal reserves in the world, attracting the attention of many jewelry lovers. Incredibly, this reserve is located in Goiás, in the Cristalina region.

Brazil is rich in minerals and has the largest crystal reserves in the world. During the period of colonization, colonizers discovered great sources of precious stones and, of course, a lot of gold. The state of Minas Gerais, for example, received its name due to its abundance of gold mines and other minerals. Known as the “land of cheese bread,” Minas Gerais was one of the most explored regions during the tropical gold rush, at the time of the Brazilian Empire.

Minas Gerais holds 25% of global crystal production

Despite the name tropical gold rush, the mineral was not the only one to be found in these lands. Minas Gerais holds 25% of the production of precious gemstones worldwide. According to the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB), the state is one of the most important places for exploration of ores in the world.

Besides, Brazil is in first place among the nine largest gemological provinces on Earth. However, amidst these numbers, the SGB reveals where the largest crystal reserve in the world is located. And no, it's not in Minas Gerais.

The position is occupied by the city of crystalline, located in the interior of the state of Goiás. Its name was also not chosen for nothing, given that the municipality, located 130 km from the Federal District, has the largest crystal reserve in the world.

It is possible to find several types of crystals that are highly sought after around the world. One of them is the Lemurian quartz crystal.

The largest crystal reserve in the world receives attention and even becomes a tourist spot

According to the official website of Cristalina City Hall, the region where the city of Cristalina is located entered the route of interest for bandeirantes who explored the interior of Brazil at the end of the 18th century.

At the time, stone crystals were not as valued as they are today, leaving them off the radar of travelers.

This reality changed in the following years, as the place began to be visited with an interest in the richness of the stones. Given the abundance of crystals, the city was initially named Serra dos Cristais.

Between the years 1916 and 1918, the Crystal mines in the region were emancipated. Thus, the first name given to the city was São Sebastião dos Cristais, which was renamed Cristalina shortly afterwards.

According to information from Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the extraction and sale of crystals continue to be the city's main activities, which owns the largest crystal reserve in the world. Tourism is also highlighted, as travelers from all over the country visit Cristalina due to its rich history.

The city has more than 250 stone artisans

In Cristalina, there are around 250 artisans dedicated to cutting stones and making jewelry, according to the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) Goiás.

Adeguimar Arantes, was once a jewelry consultant in Cristalina and, since 1985, has dedicated herself to presenting the Cerrado through crafts, using recycled metals and maintaining traditional production methods.

In 1879, two French gold explorers, Etienne Lepesqueur and Léon Laboissière, were impressed by the amount of crystals sprouting from the ground and sent samples to France.

The high purity of these crystals made them very famous in Paris. In 1884, another Frenchman, Emílio Levy, created a crystal sales house that boosted the growth of the local population.

Although Cristalina has agriculture as its main economic activity, tourism has great development potential to generate employment and income for local residents and small businesses in the region.
