The state could experience a historic transformation! An exploration project promises a 61% increase in GDP and 54 thousand new jobs.
The exploitation of Equatorial Margin, considered a strategic priority for Brazil, can transform the economy of Amapá and other states in the North and Northeast.
A study by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) estimates that Amapá's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could grow 61,2%, in addition to the generation of 54 thousand new jobs.
The initiative was the subject of a seminar held at the Legislative Assembly of Amapá last Friday (14), highlighting the opportunities and challenges of this energy potential.

The Equatorial Margin, which extends from Amapá to Rio Grande do Norte, has been called “new pre-salt”, as its estimated production capacity can reach 1,1 million barrels of oil per day.
Given this potential, the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) included the exploration of the region as one of the priorities for 2025.
If realized, this discovery could boost the Brazilian economy and reduce dependence on fuel imports.
Economic and social potential for Amapá
The impact of oil exploration on the Equatorial Margin could bring significant changes to Amapá.
In addition to generating jobs and significantly increasing GDP, the collection of royalties can boost investments in infrastructure, health and education..
Municipalities such as Oiapoque, Calçoene, Amapá, Macapá, Itaubal and Santana should benefit the most, with growth in commerce and improvements in public services.
According to the Minister of Integration and Regional Development, Waldez Goes, exploration needs to begin as soon as possible.
"If we do not start this process quickly, Brazil's economic development will be compromised. This affects everything from industry to agribusiness, as all of these activities depend on energy.”, He stated.
With the advancement of research and the approval of projects, the expectation is that the first barrels will be extracted in the next decade.
Petrobras and environmental responsibility
Petrobras leads the research in Equatorial Margin and arrives in the region with a solid history of innovation and environmental responsibility.
“Petrobras brings a lot of scientific information, knowledge and responsibility.
It is one of the most respected companies in the world in this sector, both from an environmental and technological point of view”, highlighted Góes.
Despite the promises of development, there are concerns about environmental impacts.
The Equatorial Margin is home to sensitive ecosystems and communities that depend on artisanal fishing.
However, according to Góes, President Lula has already expressed his support for exploration, as long as all environmental obligations are respected.
"Amapá has all the conditions to lead this process because it is the only Brazilian state that is negative in carbon emissions, that is, it captures more gases than it emits.”, explained the minister.
Experts say that, if applied with cutting-edge technology and strict control standards, exploration can coexist with environmental preservation.
Opportunities for different sectors
The possibility of economic growth excited representatives from different sectors of Amapá society.
The president of the Federation of Fishermen and Aquaculturists of the State of Amapá (FEPAP), Leidinaldo Luiz Gama de Paula, highlighted the importance of the activity for fishing workers.
"Fishing goes hand in hand with development. Oil exploration could be a game changer for our state”, He stated.
The merchant Nilson Nogueira, who works selling açaí, believes that the initiative will open new horizons.
"Amapá does not yet have a strong economic base to drive new policies. The population has been waiting for a long time for development that will make us competitive in relation to other states.", said.
Furthermore, expectations are also high among young people and workers seeking new opportunities.
The fish seller Abmael de Souza sees exploration as an opportunity for professional qualification.
"It will be a great opportunity for young people to study and work in the area, as the activity will require specialized labor.”, he pointed out.
As a result, universities and technical institutions are already discussing the creation of courses aimed at the oil industry.
What will the exploration process be like?
The Equatorial Margin exploration project will be divided into stages.
First, research and prospecting will be carried out to map the region's real potential.
Then, the process of extracting and marketing the oil begins.
According to Goes, the funds raised will be used for strategic investments in the state.
With adequate planning, Amapá can reach a new level of development and consolidate itself as a national energy hub.
Although there are still challenges to be overcome, the expectation is that the exploration of the Equatorial Margin will become a milestone in the economy of Amapá.
This would enable sustainable economic growth and new opportunities for the population.
