In an unusual case, a driver called the police to report a car driving the wrong way, without realizing that he himself was the offender. The confusion created an unexpected scene and quickly went viral, drawing laughter and questions about driving caution.
O sheriff's office from Lancaster County, in the US state of Nebraska, released a curious case involving a drunk driver who was in the against.
The driver called the police to report another driver who, according to him, was driving in the wrong direction. However, the call itself helped the police to locate him and realize that he was the real offender in this story.
The wrong-way driver incident
The case occurred in March 2023, but images of the police approach were released some time later.

The driver, whose name was not released, reported to the police dispatcher that a car was coming in the wrong direction on Highway 77, almost causing an accident.
He described the situation as “horrible” and stated that the other driver had his headlights on high beam.
The police were called and sent a patrol car to locate the suspect.
The driver who made the call ended up being found driving in the wrong direction.
The approach was recorded on video, showing the driver's surprise upon realizing he was the offender.
Approach and confession that was against the grain
When he was stopped, the police officer asked if he knew the reason for the stop. The driver immediately admitted:
"Yes, because I was on the wrong side of the road. I must have missed an exit.. "
When asked if he himself had called the police, he confirmed, still not fully understanding the situation:
"Yes, because I thought someone was going in the wrong direction.” Realizing the irony of the situation, he concluded: “Yes, like an idiot.”
Consequences and campaign against drunk driving
Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. However, tests showed that the driver's blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. He was arrested for drunk driving.
The sheriff's office used the case to reinforce a campaign against drunk driving. In a statement, it highlighted that "driving under the influence of alcohol continues to be a leading cause of traffic injuries and deaths."
How it works in Brazil
In Brazil, driving under the influence of alcohol is a very serious offense, according to Article 165 of the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). The penalty for this offense includes a fine of R$2.934,70, resulting from the application of a multiplier factor of 10 on the base value of very serious offenses.
In addition to the fine, the offending driver receives 7 points on their National Driver's License (CNH) and has their driving license suspended for 12 months.
In the event of a repeat offense within a 12-month period, the fine will double to R$5.869,40, and the driver may have their license revoked.
It is important to highlight that refusing to take the breathalyzer test is also considered an infraction, subjecting the driver to the same penalties mentioned above.
There is currently a Bill (PL 3574/24) under consideration that proposes increasing the fine to R$30 for drivers who, in addition to driving under the influence, are involved in traffic accidents. However, this bill has not yet been approved and is therefore not in force.
