Petrobras is seeking partnerships in the oil sector to develop new offshore projects and reduce the amount of carbon emitted.

This past Sunday (15th), the first Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) took place in Houston, United States. An event that can bring great results for oil and our country. The fashion of the time is to launch projects that aim to reduce the carbon content that harms the environment. With that in mind, Petrobras is considering the possibility of increasing production of cleaner oil, in order to attract more partnerships.

Taking advantage of the opportunity of the event, meetings have already been scheduled with potential partners to address this issue. Among the names of the big companies in this field, we can mention: Exxon, Mobil Corp, TotalEnergies and Ecopetrol, BP PLC and Chevron Corp. Nothing officially has been released yet, however, it is expected that a positive result will be shared soon.

What is Petrobras' goal in offshore oil partnerships?

One of the projects that could happen is the development of oil fields in deeper waters, where low-carbon technologies will be invested. What seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which cause the greenhouse effect. According to Fernando Borges, director of E&P at Petrobras, “projects that produce less CO2 will be the last to go offline. This environment made our new projects more attractive.”

Seeking to be attractive in the eyes of large companies, Brazil is investing heavily in offshore projects. One of them aims to operate on electricity platforms using low-carbon instead of fossil fuels.

With this modification alone, the platforms will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20%. And where there are deeper wells, with more crude oil and a lower sulfur content, it would make Petrobras produce a cleaner fuel.

Shortly after Guyana and Suriname achieved more than 9 billion barrels of oil, Fernando Borges reveals that both countries are almost a source of inspiration for these new projects that are on the way. However, there is a struggle for Petrobras to be able to explore around 30 kilometers close to the countries' borders.

Among the companies that may become partners in these projects, the best option, according to Borges, would be Exxon. However, if it doesn't work, the range of options will still be open to others. The important thing is that some offshore partnership is closed.

The importance of low carbon for Petrobras

The whole world is moving to mitigate the amount of carbon emitted from oil platforms. In order not to be the target of attacks, many companies are migrating to areas where it is possible to produce oil without emitting much carbon dioxide and with lower investments.

It is in this sector that our country is seeking to develop two major projects. Where both manage to pump about 150.000 barrels daily, using only 4 wells. Until 20 years ago, for this amount to be obtained, it would take about 20 wells using their full power. Now, things seem to be flowing for the better, both in terms of the environment and in terms of production.

Even if it looks like a high-level offshore project, investments need to be made so that it is not just on paper. Thus, this is one of the main reasons why Petrobras is looking for partners, therefore, the values of investments in oil fields can reach up to US$ 6 billion.
