Ecovix shipyard will generate around 5 jobs with the construction of the POLAR ship for the Brazilian Navy

With the chance of building a polar ship at the Ecovix shipyard, a new sigh of hope arises for the naval hub of Rio Grande, which will translate into many job openings in the region

Good news for shipbuilding in Rio Grande do Sul! Ecovix is negotiating with the Chilean company ASMAR, the construction of the first Polar ship at its shipyard in the city of Rio Grande. Another excellent news renewed the hope of professionals in the shipping industry, after the crisis in the sector caused by corruption that led to major layoffs. Brasfels shipyard wins another Modec contract and shipbuilding in RJ wins survival.

According to councilor Benito Gonçalves, in an interview with Petronotícias, although many have left the city, Rio Grande still has a large contingent of specialized labor waiting for the rebirth of the naval center in the region. “The city has not emptied. The job went away, but a lot of people stayed here,” he said. The councilor pointed out that Ecovix's own projections are that the work on the polar ship could generate up to 5 jobs. “This has made people very euphoric. We are very much looking forward to this Chilean company closing this contract with Ecovix”, he concluded.

The economic crisis in Rio Grande occurred on December 12, 2016, when there were massive layoffs at the Ecovix jobsite. In 2010, the construction of eight hulls for works by Petrobras was planned, which meant 20 years of work and many jobs.

Workers were the only ones penalized for everything that happened since Operation Lava Jato, where we had to watch platforms being cut down and sold as scrap, in addition to imported parts, worth millions and millions of dollars, being sold as trash. At the time, there were three or four blocks left for P-71. P-72 was practically complete, it just needed to be assembled.

With the good news of the chance to build a polar vessel at the Ecovix shipyard, a new sigh of hope arises for the Rio Grande naval hub, which will translate into investments in safety, health, works and employment in the region.

It is a different construction, the new project will help the Brazilian naval sector to develop even more, acquiring unprecedented knowledge in Brazil, because it is not an oil platform, it is a polar vessel. It is a complex vessel that can generate more than 5 jobs!

For the construction of the ship, the Ecovix shipyard estimates the creation of 5 new direct and indirect jobs. Not counting suppliers, indirect labor, trade, we can say that a ship like this will easily reach 10 people.

Rio Grande do Sul is not just an Ecovix shipyard. There are other shipyards in the region such as QGI and, in the neighboring city of São José do Norte, the EBR shipyard. The EBR, by the way, made four modules for the modec last year. And now, more recently, they picked up four or five more modules to do. So they're starting to hire again.

The shipyard is being cleaned and organized for possible resumption. There is great expectation that this Chilean company can close this contract with Ecovix.

“I, as a councilor, acting in the political part, have been walking side by side to try to facilitate everything we can to open the doors to new projects in the cities of Rio Grande and São José do Norte. Thus, we will be able to recover what we lost: the dignity of having back the jobs for which we qualified”, said Benito Gonçalves.
