“If there is a place in the world with potential for growth in solar energy, that place is Brazil. We have an unparalleled competitive advantage,” said Carlos Andrade, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at EDP.
“We are going to invest in centralized generation as well. However, we are not interested in offering energy for the system as a whole, but for the end customer, such as commerce, industry and together with EDP Renováveis”, commented Andrade.

According to Rodrigo Sauaia, CEO of ABSOLAR (Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy), the technology for producing energy by converting solar radiation is a “revolution” with no return.
Currently, Brazil has 6,4 GW of installed solar energy capacity, accumulating more than R$ 33,1 billion in investments and more than 190 jobs generated.
According to ABSOLAR, the country occupies the 16th position in the world ranking of solar energy use.
EDP Renováveis expectations
EDP believes that, after the peak and worst moment of COVID-19, Brazil will be able to resume the path of growth. It is a resilient economy, with immense resources and a great capacity for recovery.
“For this reason, we continue to have long-term plans for the country, with consistent investments in Distribution, in order to continuously improve our service, and concluding our transmission lots within the agreed cost and deadlines, maintaining the excellence for which EDP became recognized in the country. We have been working to increase our presence in the B2C segment as well, consolidating EDP Smart and the full range of services offered in solar generation, energy efficiency and electric mobility”, says the president of EDP Brasil.
In Brazil, EDP is also a reference in areas such as Innovation, Governance and Sustainability, having been included in the B14 Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) for 3 consecutive years. One of EDP's most recent and emblematic initiatives in this field was its commitment to the United Nations (UN) to ensure that, by 2030, 100% of the energy generated by the Company in Brazil will come from renewable sources.
EDP also subscribes to a series of national and international initiatives linked to sustainability, with emphasis on the Global Compact for ONU; the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, a business initiative to account for greenhouse gases; and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), related to climate change.
