Chinese company brings to market a new cheap electric car that hits the market for less than R$ 50 thousand. The electric vehicle delivers autonomy of up to 230 km.
Vehicle manufacturer MG Motor, from Saic Motor, headquartered in China, has launched yet another cheap electric car model for the Indian market, the minicar called the Comet EV. Until then, this is cheapest vehicle in the category available in the country. The company's idea is to use the model to face rivals in the country, such as Tata Motors, in the third largest vehicle market in the world.
Popular electric car with a price equivalent to R$ 50 delivers 230 km of autonomy
O two door cheap electric car it can run 230 km on a single charge, costing from US$ 9,8, which in direct conversion costs R$ 49 at the current exchange rate. In this way, the Chinese EV costs less than Tiago, a four-door electric car marketed by Tata.
Although it is more expensive, US$ 10,4, the equivalent (R$ 52), it travels more with just one charge, somewhere between 250 and 315 km, according to the automaker. MG Motor launched the Comet EV as an ideal passenger car for India's urban environment and congested roads.

According to Rajeev Chaba, head of the automaker, this is because the popular electric car is highly easy to maneuver in the urban region, during a virtual launch event. Chaba adds that the vehicle is for those looking for an intelligent solution to combat urban mobility current.
However, sales of electric cars represent less than 2% of total sales per year in India, 3,9 million vehicles between 2022 and 2023. And, for now, Tata Motors dominates this market there. However, the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks to increase it to 30% by the beginning of the decade.
Chinese automaker sales growth
The Comet, designed to carry up to four people, is MG's second EV in the Indian market. There, the company also sells the ZS, its biggest electric SUV. And the Chinese automaker expects electric cars to account for 25% to 30% of its sales in India by 2023. BYD it also launched its first popular electric car in India last year, with a plan to dominate 40% of the country's electric market by the beginning of the next decade.
The Comet's value, however, appears to be expensive compared to other cheap electric car values, due to its small size, according to Gaurav Vangaal of S&P Global Mobility. Cars are no longer just for mobility, as they have become part of a driver's lifestyle. The expectation is that MG will find enough customers for its vehicle, but it may fall short of its production targets.
Other popular electric car models hitting the market
In Bolivia, the startup Quantum Motors launched a popular electric mini car even cheaper than the Comet, costing less than 40 thousand. However, this one has space for up to three people, a maximum speed of 56 km/h and a range of 95 km with just one charge.
The model is the size of a golf cart and only has room for drivers in the front, while up to two passengers can accommodate in the back. The model takes 6-8 hours to fully charge.
According to Daniel Darense, retired from Cochabamba, he bought the electric car in September 2019, when it was launched and, until then, he has already driven 9,6 km, a distance slightly greater than that between São Paulo and London in his minicar.
