Investments to be made in the Angra 3 nuclear power plant
According to Eletronuclear's technical director, Ricardo Pereira dos Santos, most of the investments in the Angra 3 nuclear power plant should be earmarked for civil construction, assembly, completion of civil and electromechanical projects and engineering. Santos also mentioned, during a presentation at an international seminar on nuclear energy, the difficulties after several national supply contracts were interrupted in 2015, after the work on Angra 3 was paralyzed amid investigations by Lava Jato.
The goal is to have Angra 3, whose project originally dates back to the 1980s, connected to the national interconnected system by the end of 2026, as the project is being resumed. The progress of civil work on Angra 3, projected to have an installed potential of 1.405 MW, is currently estimated at just over 65%.

Last year, Eletrobras contributed around 1 billion reais and expects to allocate approximately 3 billion reais to Angra 2,5 in 2021, with 850 million reais already contributed in the first half, said director Elvira. The executive's presentation confirmed investment forecasts to be made at the plant of around 18,4 billion reais.
The privatization of Eletrobras
Considering the schedule of contributions, part of the planned investments in the Angra 3 nuclear power plant should already be made with Eletronuclear segregated from Eletrobras, which should be privatized by the beginning of next year. As nuclear energy needs to be protected by the State in Brazil, according to the rules foreseen in the privatization of Eletrobras, a new state-owned company will be created to house Eletronuclear, in addition to the Itaipu binational.
But the continuity of the works will demand a specialized company, which possibly will be foreign, forming a consortium with Brazilian companies, according to specialists present at the event. The signing of civil works and electromechanical assembly contracts, with a so-called EPCista company, specialized in the nuclear sector, is expected for December 2021. Eletrobras expects that this EPCista company will start works in March 2022.
