The construction of Tesla's Gigafactory resulted in the deforestation of 500 trees, triggering protests by environmentalists and raising questions about the environmental impact. Despite the controversies, the company Elon Musk continues with promises of corrective measures.
In a world where the fight against climate change has become a global priority, Tesla, the automotive giant and symbol of the electric car revolution, finds itself at the center of a monumental controversy.
While many see the company as an environmental salvation, its latest move has triggered a wave of outrage that has spanned continents. Environmentalists are up in arms, but the reason will surprise you. What could make a “green” company like Tesla cause such a stir?
According to information revealed by the British newspaper The Guardian and confirmed by analyzes by Kayrros, a company specializing in environmental intelligence, the construction of the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, Tesla's largest factory in Europe, resulted in the felling of approximately 500 trees.

This massive deforestation occurred between March 2020 and May 2023, affecting 329 hectares of forest in the state of Brandenburg, Germany. The consequences of this act have been widely debated, particularly in relation to the environmental impact and the fervent reactions that have emerged since then.
Environmental impact: A controversial analysis
The felling of the trees generated an immediate reaction from environmentalists and activist groups. Protests erupted across Germany, with protesters occupying trees and even setting fire to an electricity tower, in March 2023, which temporarily halted production at the factory.
Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, harshly criticized the action of local authorities, accusing them of being lenient towards the left-wing groups that organized the protests.
However, the situation goes beyond the protests. Antoine Halff, an analyst at Kayrros, explained that, although deforestation is a cause for concern, it is necessary to evaluate the issue from another perspective.
Halff highlighted that replacing combustion cars with electric vehicles can generate long-term environmental benefits. According to him, the felled trees would represent around 13 thousand tons of CO₂, equivalent to the annual emissions of 2.800 combustion cars in the United States.
Gigafactory expansion and corrective measures
Even in the face of controversies, Tesla continues its expansion. In July 2024, the Brandenburg environment ministry approved the expansion of the Gigafactory, allowing the factory's production to double to 1 million vehicles per year.
The decision sparked new protests, but Tesla defended itself, saying that although incidents during construction raised concerns, no permanent environmental damage was recorded. The company guaranteed that it implemented all necessary corrective measures to mitigate the impacts caused.
The role of technology in reporting
The complaints against Tesla would not be possible without the advanced technology used by Kayrros. The company monitored deforestation using optical satellite images captured by Sentinel-2, with a resolution of 10 meters.
These images, automatically processed and reviewed by remote sensing experts, revealed the magnitude of deforestation.
The tool was developed to help companies comply with European Union regulations, which will ban the import of products linked to deforestation from 2025.
A question of perspective: environmental benefit or harm?
The controversy surrounding Tesla is complex and raises a central question: Does the immediate environmental impact justify the potential long-term benefits of transitioning to electric vehicles?
For many, cutting down trees is too high a price to pay, especially at a critical time for preserving forests and combating climate change. On the other hand, there are those who argue that, in the long term, the transition to electric vehicles can offset the initial impact.
The future of Tesla's Gigafactory and the global response
The future of the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg and other Tesla factories will largely depend on how the company and local authorities deal with growing environmental pressure.
Deforestation caused by construction is just one example of the challenges Tesla faces as it tries to balance innovation with environmental responsibility. The global reaction to these actions will be fundamental in shaping the company's future policies and its image in the public eye.
