Companies highlight emissions reductions at ROG.e. ExxonMobil electrifies fleet by 2025, Petrobras cuts 53% of CO₂. Green technologies and sustainable energy in focus.

Companies are stepping up their efforts to reduce emissions, which is gaining prominence in the ROG. ExxonMobil, for example, plans to electrify its fleet by 2025, while Petrobras announced a 53% cut in CO₂ emissions. Green technologies and the use of sustainable energy are increasingly being prioritized by companies in their environmental strategies.

In addition to the initiatives mentioned, the search for renewable energy sources is one of the main focuses. Investment in sustainable energy not only promotes emissions reduction, but also aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The market is rapidly moving towards innovative solutions that ensure a cleaner and more energy-efficient future.

ExxonMobil and Petrobras in Electrification Project

The global urgency to reduce carbon intensity across industries has prompted many oil and gas companies to seek new technologies and strategies to improve their offshore operations in order to minimize carbon emissions. These efforts were highlighted on the agenda of ROG, one of the world’s largest energy events, held at the Olympic Boulevard in Rio de Janeiro until Thursday (26).

Maíza Goulart, executive manager of the Petrobras Research Center (Cenpes), highlighted Petrobras' initiatives that led to a reduction of more than 53% in greenhouse gas emissions between 2009 and 2023. 'We achieved this through a cultural change and investments in operational efficiency,' said the manager.

ExxonMobil Decarbonization Goals

According to Alberto Ferrin, CEO of ExxonMobil Brazil, with population growth and improved quality of life, the demand for oil and gas will continue to be significant in the energy matrix. However, the company is also focused on reducing emissions. To decarbonize all of ExxonMobil's operations, the company brought forward its netzero target from 2050 to 2035. 'All of our fields are fully electrified, and we are working to electrify our entire fleet of vessels by the end of 2025,' Ferrin highlighted.

TotalEnergies, for its part, has made sustainable development a priority in its actions, also focusing on mitigating emissions. Every year, the company allocates around US$1 billion to research and innovation, involving more than 3.500 people in 18 research centers around the world.

TotalEnergies investments in Brazil

Since 2018, in Brazil, TotalEnergies has invested approximately R$450 million in more than 80 Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) projects that combine innovation with sustainability. FINEP, the Brazilian innovation promotion agency, currently has 13 public funding calls, including technologies for generating energy from sustainable sources, low-carbon hydrogen, and energy storage, as well as security and resilience of the National Interconnected System.

Looking to the future, Vibra intends to further strengthen its core business of gas stations. This growth necessarily includes combating the irregular market, such as fraud and tax evasion.

Vibra Shares and Investments in Logistics

Ernesto Posada, CEO of Vibra, highlighted the importance of creating equal conditions for all market players and mentioned that Vibra, currently the fifth largest revenue-generating company in the country, is moving quickly to become the leading multi-energy platform in Brazil. To this end, the company has invested in several growth areas, including the B2B segment, the expansion of logistics corridors and operations in the Free Energy Market.

Sebastião Furquim, vice president of operations and logistics at Ipiranga, emphasized the need to optimize fuel logistics to support the increase in demand, especially for biofuels such as corn ethanol. Teisu Koike, executive secretary of the Ministry of Ports and Airports, emphasized that the growth in the movement of liquid cargo, including oil and fuel, shows the importance of investing in port infrastructure for the future. Under the PAC, port projects alone will require investments of R$155 billion over the next six years.

Karpowership Powerships and Hydrogen

Beyza Ozdemir, Karpowership’s director, spoke at iUP Innovation Connections, a side event of ROG, saying the company is expanding its fleet of powerships for power generation, adding 3GW of capacity in the near future. Karpowership operates in 20 countries and is collaborating with local governments to ensure energy security during droughts and climate change. The company is also supporting initiatives to desalinate water, making it drinkable for communities near its operations.

João Caldas, technology director at Casa dos Ventos, highlighted that the company is focused on solutions that reduce energy consumption and industrial costs, with projects to apply hydrogen, a promising fuel in sustainable energy. Felipe Travessos, director of ONINN, emphasized that green technologies are essential to ensure a low carbon portfolio by 2030, especially in the production of printed semiconductors.
