The federal government has announced that it intends to increase the anhydrous ethanol blend in gasoline to 2025% by 30, officially creating E30. Currently, the fuel sold at gas stations contains 27% ethanol.
According to Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), this change could reduce the price of gasoline by up to R$0,13 per liter. Furthermore, the new percentage promises strengthen national production of biofuels e reduce dependence on imports of gas.
E30 could lower prices and contain inflation
The minister Alexandre Silveira stated that the adoption of E30 could contain prices and control inflation. According to him, the new fuel will directly contribute to the country becoming independent of external purchases of fossil derivatives.
In 2024, Brazil imported around 760 million liters of gasoline. With the adoption of the new mixture, the country will no longer need to import and may even export the surplus, while demand for ethanol is expected to grow 1,5 billion liters per year.

Furthermore, Silveira highlighted that the E30 represents a milestone in the national energy transition. As he stated: “We will free ourselves from the constraints of international parity pricing. The price of gasoline will be that of domestic competitiveness. This is a reduction in inflation.”
Technical tests prove feasibility
O Mauá Institute of Technology (IMT) conducted tests with E30 to verify the technical feasibility of the mixture. The research evaluated drivability, performance and emissionsUsing 16 vehicles and 13 motorcycles under different conditions with both gasoline and ethanol.
The results confirmed that the E30 does not significantly alter the performance of the vehicles. Therefore, drivers will not notice any changes in drivability.
On the other hand, the study identified cold starting difficulties on some motorcycles, especially in environments with lower temperatures. However, IMT technicians stated that these limitations do not compromise the adoption of the new fuel.
According to the technique Luana Camargo, who participated in the presentation of the results, “the differences found in the tests are not obstacles to the adoption of the E30”.
E30 could reach 35% in the future
Although the new limit is 30%, Brazilian legislation allows ethanol blend in gasoline reaches up to 35%, as long as there is technical proof.
Therefore, if the results of the E30 are confirmed in practice, the government may consider further increase the proportion In the next years.
Silveira also highlighted that the country is taking advantage of the expansion of corn ethanol production, which is growing rapidly. With this, Brazil guarantees domestic supply even in periods of lower supply of sugarcane ethanol.
The measure is part of the program Fuel of the Future, which aims to accelerate the energy transition in the transport sector with cleaner and more sustainable fuels.
