Energy transition is already happening and natural gas was approached at Rio Oil & Gas as one of the main fuels to help in this moment
The 2022 edition of Rio Oil & Gas brought important discussions regarding the energy transition. In this sense, a debate session held at the event entitled “The role of natural gas in the energy transition in Brazil” raised a important debate. After all, this fuel seems to play a key role in the transition sought within the oil and gas sector.
The CEO of PSR, Luiz Augusto Barroso and the President of EPE, share the idea that natural gas will continue to play an important role in the electricity sector. Currently, this fuel already works as a complement to electrification and the trend is to increase its use in the coming years. Want to know more? Read on.
Biogas and biomethane are very promising variations of natural gas in the oil and gas sector in Brazil
According to Gabriel Kropsch, vice-president of Abiogás, Brazil has great potential for the production of biomethane and biogas, important variations of natural gas. In this sense, Gabriel also states that Brazil can produce the equivalent of 120 million cubic meters per year. This type of renewable and alternative fuel has already been nicknamed “hillbilly pre-salt”, as it is complementary to oil,

Large companies such as Eneva, 3R Petroleum and PetroReconcavo are some of the main names in the oil and gas sector that produce this type of fuel. During the Rio Oil & Gas event, these companies participated in a panel entitled “Onshore natural gas production: perspectives and creative solutions' and reiterated the importance of establishing adequate regulation and taxation.
Regulation and taxation must be done to organize the trade of natural gas in the oil and gas sector
Camila Schoti, general manager of Commercialization of Energy, Natural Gas and Liquids at Eneva, stated that the regulation and taxation on the activity of companies that work with this fuel should not make trade unfeasible. Thus, she stressed the importance of economic studies to give more visibility and prominence to biogas and biomethane.
Furthermore, Camila argued that the producer needs to be sure of a return on their investment when using these new renewable fuels based on natural gas. Therefore, regulation would be ideal to stimulate the growth and competitiveness of this fuel in the oil and gas sector. It is worth highlighting that Eneva entered into a new partnership with Vale and will expand the use of energy by these industrial consumers.
Matheus Dias, from 3R Petroleum, agrees with the need for greater regulation of natural gas for greater competitiveness in the scenario. Furthermore, João Vitor Silva Moreira, director of Regulation and New Business at PetroReconcavo, also points out that there is a market in constant expansion, which is the Northeast, with good prospects for growth after new regulations.
Investment in this gas is one of the main challenges that the oil and gas sector may face in the coming years
There was also a discussion on the “Opportunities and challenges of the new business environment in the natural gas sector”. During this debate, several specialists who work with natural gas pointed out the expectations for the coming years. In this sense, they highlighted that the biggest challenge may be the investment in technology and infrastructure to meet demand in the energy transition.
According to Jose Carlos Broisler Oliver, executive director of Compass Gas and Energy, it is necessary to diversify energy sources, and natural gas is great. In turn, Victor Santos, executive director of Galp, natural gas allows for greater matrix diversification as it facilitates the entry and use of green hydrogen in Brazil.
The CEO of Enauta, Décio Oddone, points out that the possible construction of gas pipelines would be a great way to take advantage of Brazil's potential for the use of natural gas. However, again, investment would be one of the main national challenges.
