During the Climate Summit, the Federal Government, represented by President Bolsonaro, signaled about carbon emissions and deforestation
Today, during Climate Leaders Summit, the Brazilian Federal Government, which was represented by President Jair Bolsonaro, spoke about proposals to reduce carbon emissions and tackle deforestation in Brazil. Bolsonaro said that, in order to strengthen inspection bodies against deforestation, he would increase investments in this sector.
Federal Government reveals goals to neutralize carbon emissions and deforestation
The event, which aimed to raise environmental commitments, had representatives from several countries. President Jair Bolsonaro presented his goals to be able to neutralize carbon emissions and stop deforestation. Bolsonaro said Brazil's new target for achieving climate neutrality is in 2050.
In his speech, Bolsonaro says that the goal set by the Federal Government to achieve climate neutrality – when the nation drastically reduces its carbon emissions and offsets the remaining emissions with environmental measures – has been reduced by 10 years (previously, the goal was 2060).

To curb illegal deforestation, the Federal Government has informed that this will happen by 2030 – a date that had already been announced in a letter addressed to the American President, Joe Biden, last week. The Brazilian president says that if they reach the goal of ending illegal deforestation by 2030, about 50% of carbon emissions would be reduced.
“We have to recognize that it will be a complex task. Command and control measures are part of the answer. Despite the government's budget limitations, I decided to strengthen environmental agencies, doubling the resources allocated to inspection actions”, says Bolsonaro during the event.
Bolsonaro also mentioned that Brazil needs financial support from other countries to preserve the Amazon. However, developed countries willing to invest in the Amazon have already said that they will only make the contribution when the Federal Government releases true data on the reduction of deforestation in Brazil.
Past Federal Government targets to reduce carbon emissions and end deforestation
Previously, the Federal Government had said that the goal was to achieve a 43% reduction in carbon emissions by the year 2030. However, at the end of last year, even with the absolute numbers presented during the Paris Agreement, the goal for neutralize carbon emissions and deforestation was maintained.
This data is revised every period and, if necessary, the percentages to neutralize carbon emissions and deforestation can be changed. If the Brazilian Federal Government maintained the target at 43%, carbon emissions would increase.
Several countries have announced ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions
With President Joe Biden's announcement, the American Federal Government announced the greatest commitment against global warming. Biden said that by the end of this decade, the United States would cut carbon emissions by 50% to 52%.
The EU – European Union – has announced that it will reduce its carbon emissions by at least 55% by the year 2030. Canada, in turn, has announced that its reduction will reach 40% and 45% within a decade . The third largest economy in the world, Japan said during the event that it will set a target of 46% to reduce carbon emissions by 2030.
