The federal government measure aims to reduce the cost of electricity in some isolated regions of the country
Electricity is a good that many Brazilians still do not have access to at a reasonable cost. The vast majority of these people live in isolated regions, such as in some parts of the Amazon. Many communities use diesel generators to to produce energy. Of course, this alternative is very inefficient, expensive and polluting. Thinking of solving the problem, the Federal government published a decree that regulates the program 'Pro-Amazonia'.
What is Pro-Amazônia
This is the Program for the Structural Reduction of Energy Generation Costs in the Legal Amazon and the Navigability of the Madeira and Tocantins Rivers (Pró-Amazônia Legal). The program is expected to receive R$ 295 million annually from Eletronorte to fund projects aimed at reducing costs electricity in these isolated regions of the Amazon.
The government points out that around 3 million people in the regions of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia and Roraima will benefit from the Pró-Amazônia Legal program.

“Usually, these locations, because they are farther away, use fossil fuels a lot, diesel. And it is not always possible to serve these communities 24 hours a day. The idea, when introducing this program, is to replace this fossil fuel with the use of a renewable source of energy, renewable fuels, energy efficiency, changing equipment and improving the use of energy in these remote locations and, if possible, integrating these locations into the Interconnected System Nacional using transmission lines or distribution lines”, explained Thiago Prado, director of the Energy Planning Department of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME).
The good news is that the measure will not only benefit people who live in isolated places, but also the population in general: “The Program manages to reach not only those who are living in isolated communities, but also consumers of the Interconnected System, because parts of these costs are supported by our tariff on the electricity bill”, says Thiago.
Part of the resources of the Pró-Amazônia program will also serve to improve the navigability of the Madeira River, which runs from Rondônia to Amazonas, and the Tocantins River, which rises in Goiás, running through the states of Tocantins, Maranhão and Pará.
“It will be R$ 3 billion over 10 years and the Government will have 15 years to apply this resource. If this resource is not used, we will be able to allocate it to our Energy Development Account, also aiming to reduce the electricity bill”, concluded the MME director.
