Coming soon, the Fire engine, which is the most old Otto cycle operating in Brazil, will retire. Below, we explain the reason for this decision. Recently, Fiat announced the end of production of the Fire engine, which was introduced in the brand's vehicles in 1985 and arrived in Brazil in the early 2000s, powering models such as the Palio hatch, the Siena sedan and the Weekend station wagon.

This beloved engine, successor to the Fiasa that powered the Fiat 147 and, after some modifications, the Uno Mille, is the oldest Otto cycle engine still in production in Brazil. First of all, a little about the story of this “war veteran” who is about to retire. The acronym Fire, contrary to what many think, does not refer to “fire” (fire in English), but rather to Fully Integrated Robotized Engine, which means Engine Completely Manufactured by Robots.

The introduction of the Fire engine represented a major change for Fiat, which began using a robotic assembly line, increasing production scale and reducing costs.

While it is no longer produced permanently, the Fire engine continues to “give the air of grace” in one of the most affordable and best-selling models in Brazil in the hatchback segment.

This engine is present in the Fiat Mobi Like, which offers the driver between 71 hp and 74 hp of power (gasoline and ethanol), in addition to torque that varies between 9,3 and 9,7 kgf/m, depending on the fuel used. With the end of the Fire engine, the Mobi will adopt the 1.0 Firefly 3-cylinder engine.

Fire's executioner has a name

The main reason for the end of production of the Fire engine is Proconve L8 (Air Pollution Control Program from Motor Vehicles). This pollutant emissions regulatory program will come into force from 2025.

As happened with the arrival of the Proconve L7 in 2022, many automakers had to adapt their production lines and decree the end of some models that would not meet the new requirements unless they invested large amounts.

For the beloved Fire to comply with the new rules, Fiat would have to carry out several adaptations, which would not be financially viable. Therefore, the oldest engine in Brazil is about to say goodbye.
