Number of Brazilians who need glasses or lenses grows by 77%
Now that you know how the fine for driving without glasses works, it is important to know that the number of Brazilians who have restrictions on their driver's license due to vision problems has almost doubled in the last decade.
According to data from the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran) and analyzed by the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology (CBO), the number of drivers with this type of observation on their license increased from 14,4 million to 25,4 million between 2014 and 2024. This represented an increase of 77%.
CBO attributes this growth to several factors, such as the aging of the population, prolonged exposure to cell phone and computer screens, the increased incidence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, stress, and bad lifestyle habits such as poor diet and sedentary lifestyle. In addition, vision assessment exams for obtaining a driver's license have become more rigorous in recent years.
Traffic fines for driving without glasses also increase
In Brazil, the fines for driving without glasses have been increasing exponentially. In Paraná, for example, three out of every ten drivers need glasses or contact lenses to drive.
In the first half of 2024 alone, the number of drivers fined for driving without wearing glasses or lenses on state highways increased. According to the State Highway Police (PRE), in 2023, there were 184 cases.
From January to June 2024, there were 198 infractions of the same type, that is, in six months, the number exceeded the total of the previous year.
Captain Marcio Rodrigues, from the PRE, emphasizes that driving without glasses or corrective lenses, when indicated, represents a traffic risk. During the process of renewing a driver's license, if the doctor identifies that the driver needs glasses or lenses, he or she must refer the driver to an ophthalmologist and only after the consultation with the specialist can the driver repeat the vision exam at the Department of Traffic.
