2024 Elections: What Happens If You Don't Vote?
With the 2024 elections approaching, it is worth paying attention to: Voting is mandatory in Brazil for all literate citizens between the ages of 18 and 70. Anyone who fails to appear at the polls without justification will have to pay a fine for each round they miss. This could catch a lot of people off guard!
The 2024 elections are scheduled for October 6, with the second round scheduled for the 27th of the same month, if necessary.. For those who are thinking about missing a shift, it is good to know that the amount of the fine has already been defined: R$3,51 per shift. Resolution No. 23.659/2021 of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) makes it clear that this fee will be applied to those who do not justify their absence.
The justification can be made up to 60 days after the election date. But be careful: if this deadline is missed, you will need to go to an Electoral Office to regularize your situation. And, if the justification is rejected, a new fine may be applied, depending on the decision of the electoral judge.

How do I pay the fine for not voting?
If you end up not voting and have to pay the fine, the process is very simple. You can resolve this on the TSE website, in the e-Título app, or directly at an electoral office.. Payment options include PIX, credit card (via Mercado Pago or PicPay), and bank slip (Union Collection Guide – GRU). But be careful: bills worth less than R$50,00 can only be paid at Banco do Brasil.
And if you have problems confirming the data when paying the fine, the only way to resolve the issue is to go to your electoral district.
Consequences of not paying the fine in the 2024 elections
If you fail to vote for three consecutive elections, without justification or without paying the fine, your voter registration may be cancelled. And this brings a series of headaches! Some of the main consequences include:
Difficulty obtaining or renewing passports and identity cards, especially for those living outside the country. Inability to hold public office, receive salaries from government agencies or participate in public examinations. Problems enrolling or continuing studies at schools and universities. Limitations in selection processes and competitions, in addition to complications in carrying out acts that require proof of regularity with military service or income tax.
The 2024 elections are not only a time to exercise citizenship, but also a legal obligation. So, if you are unable to vote, it is best to justify or resolve the fine right away, avoiding bigger problems in the future.
First election in Brazil
The first election in Brazil took place in 1532, in the village of São Vicente, located on the coast of São Paulo. At the time, members of the City Council, one of the first public administration bodies in the country, were elected. This electoral process was very restricted, with participation limited to white, Catholic men and landowners, reflecting the colonial society of the time.
Over time, the Brazilian electoral system has undergone several changes, including the expansion of the right to vote and the creation of new democratic institutions. Only in 1932, with the creation of the Electoral Code, did voting become secret and extended to women., marking a major advance in the country's democratization process.
