Between October 21 and 24, the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) carried out a major operation to ensure quality and legality in the fuel sector throughout the country, with a focus on Bahia. The action, which involved agencies such as the Bahia State Finance Department (Sefaz-BA), the Bahia Institute of Metrology and Quality (Ibametro), Procon and the Military Police, inspected a total of 49 gas stations in ten cities in Bahia, aiming to ensure that consumers are filling up with quality fuel that complies with standards.

The first inspection task force visited 26 gas stations in the cities of Conceição do Jacuípe, Feira de Santana, Conceição do Coité, Serrinha and Santa Bárbara. In Feira de Santana, one of the gas stations was closed for selling C-grade gasoline that did not meet the standards established by the ANP. Another establishment in the city was issued a citation for using the visual identity of a distributor even though it was operating under a white flag, a practice that can confuse consumers as to the origin of the product. In Conceição do Coité, the inspection also caught a gas station not complying with the minimum operating hours, an infraction that compromises the regularity of service to the public.

The second phase of operation focused on cities Capim Grosso, Ourolândia, Jacobina, Várzea da Roça and Riachão do Jacuípe, where 23 gas stations were inspected. During this stage, a gas station in Capim Grosso was closed for operating without proper authorization, leading to the seizure of 5.206 liters of fuel. In Riachão do Jacuípe, another establishment was fined for displaying the brand of a distributor without proper registration. In total, 19 fuel samples were collected for laboratory analysis, which may identify fraud and adulteration in the products.

Consequences for offending gas stations

The penalties for gas stations that are caught in irregularities are severe. The ANP foresees fines ranging from R$5 to R$5 million, depending on the severity of the infraction. The objective is to curb practices that put the consumer and the environment at risk, in addition to ensuring fair competition in the market.

The importance of ANP inspection

The action in Bahia is part of a national strategy by the ANP, which carried out simultaneous inspections in other states, such as Amazonas, the Federal District, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Roraima and São Paulo. These operations are a direct response to complaints and irregularities detected at gas stations, reinforcing the ANP's commitment to protecting consumers and maintaining transparency in the fuel market.

Collaboration between agencies strengthens the fight against fraud

These operations were only possible thanks to the collaboration between ANP and other inspection and control agencies. Sefaz-BA, Ibametro, Procon and the Military Police, in addition to the Technical Police Department (DPT) in some actions, worked side by side to verify everything from the quality of the fuels to the legality of the establishments' documents. The union of these efforts allowed for a more robust and efficient operation, with a focus on ensuring consumer safety.

ANP closes gas stations to protect consumers and ensure legality

These actions are a crucial step towards strengthening consumer confidence in the fuel sector and demonstrating that authorities are vigilant against fraud and abuse. The ANP’s actions are essential to combat irregularities and promote a safer and more transparent business environment.

A The expectation is that this intense monitoring will bring positive results, encouraging gas stations to comply with regulations, respecting both consumers and healthy competition in the market.
