Attention, drivers! The city will have 16 new radars installed to intensify traffic control. Violations such as running red lights, illegal turns and invading exclusive lanes will be targeted.
In an initiative that promises to transform the routine of drivers in Belo Horizonte, Belo Horizonte City Hall (PBH) announced the installation of 16 new electronic surveillance radars at various points in the capital of Minas Gerais.
The measure aims to intensify traffic surveillance and ensure greater safety for pedestrians and drivers. But are drivers prepared for this change?
New radars: where and when?
- Man surprises by buying R$30 plate at thrift store and discovers it is a Chinese treasure that could be worth R$28 thousand
- Air conditioning: discover the ideal temperature to save energy and maintain comfort in the heat
- End of an era: Renault abandons important hatchback in Brazil after 17 years to focus on compact SUVs!
- This is the car with the weakest engine in history — Only 4,2 (horsepower) and reaches a top speed of about 60 km/h
Last Thursday, January 16, 2025, PBH published the approval for the implementation of 16 radars in the coming days.
Of these, 11 will be installed in new sections, while the other five will replace existing equipment.
All devices are part of a contract signed by the city hall at the end of 2024, valid until 2029.
Purpose of the measure
BHTrans, company responsible for traffic in the capital, clarified that approval is a crucial step for the equipment to be ready to operate, expanding and guaranteeing road safety on the roads of Belo Horizonte.
However, the radars are not yet in operation, as they depend on the completion of steps such as adequate road signage and energizing the devices.
Once they are ready, information banners will be placed at the locations to guide drivers and pedestrians about the start date of operation of the electronic monitoring equipment.
Types of monitored infractions
Of the new equipment, 10 will be dedicated to detecting traffic light advances, nine from the Brascontrol brand and one from Pumatronix.
Additionally, a Pumatronix device will simultaneously identify running a traffic light and making a prohibited turn.
Two other devices from Consilux and two from Brascontrol will carry out the same combined inspection.
Additionally, a radar will be responsible for monitoring both running traffic lights and invading the exclusive bus lane.

Experts support the initiative
Traffic expert Cínthia Almeida highlights that the installation of new radars is essential to encourage drivers to comply with the rules established by Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB).
She highlights that the annual average of traffic deaths in the country varies between 33 and 35 thousand, an alarming number that highlights the need for strict monitoring measures.
Cínthia also emphasizes the importance of ongoing educational campaigns to raise awareness among drivers about the importance of respecting traffic laws for the safety of everyone.
The impact on drivers
With the imminent activation of these new radars, drivers in Belo Horizonte will need to pay extra attention when driving on the city's roads.
Stricter enforcement seeks to prevent violations such as running red lights, illegal turns and invading bus lanes, practices that put road safety at risk.
Therefore, it is essential that drivers pay attention to signs and respect traffic regulations to avoid penalties and contribute to safer traffic.
And you, are you prepared for this new reality in Belo Horizonte traffic?
Installing radars is easy, what I want to see is taking care of the buses and the potholed roads…
This is cowardice, not polite at all!
There is no money to fix the asphalt on the streets, but there is money to fine people. This should be prohibited if the road is not in good condition.
