Fiocruz offers free master's and doctoral courses in health history, with the possibility of scholarships. Sign up and participate in an excellent academic program recognized by Capes!

Few academic initiatives in Brazil have as much international prestige as the Fiocruz postgraduate program.

But did you know that it is possible to enroll in master's and doctoral courses completely free of charge, with the potential for scholarships? Discover all the details of this coveted selection and how to take advantage of this opportunity.

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), recognized worldwide for the impact of its research in the field of biomedical and health sciences, opens applications for the Postgraduate Program in History of Science and Health (PPGHCS).

With a legacy that extends since its creation in 2000, the program combines academic excellence and social commitment.

Its classes are taught on the historic Fiocruz campus in Manguinhos, Rio de Janeiro, and offer students a space for learning and reflecting on contemporary scientific and social challenges.

A program of excellence recognized by Capes

With a score of 6 from the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes/MEC), the PPGHCS not only attests to its academic quality, but also highlights the relevance of its contributions to the training of specialized professionals.

The program offers courses that not only produce masters and doctors, but also expand the impact of postgraduate studies on national research and education.

Furthermore, the research lines address fundamental themes for the understanding of science and health, offering a critical analysis of the intersection between scientific knowledge and social demands.

Who can apply?

The courses are aimed at people with a higher education degree, especially in the areas of human, social, biological and health sciences.

Although the focus is on these areas, interdisciplinarity is encouraged, allowing graduates from other fields to contribute new perspectives.

Classes are full-time, and there are 15 places available each year for both the master's and doctorate degrees.

Three lines of impact research

The program organizes its research into three main areas:

History of Science: Knowledge, Places and Practices

This line investigates how different scientific knowledge was produced, transmitted and applied throughout history.

History of Health Policies, Institutions and Professions

Here, the focus is on the evolution of public policies and the role of institutions and health professionals in society.

History of Medicine and Diseases

Health is analyzed in a historical context, including the emergence of diseases and the transformation of medical practices.

These lines of research seek to foster debates on the historical and contemporary challenges of science and health in Brazil and around the world.

    Scholarships: an essential incentive

Although the course is free, there is the possibility of granting scholarships.

According to Fiocruz, these scholarships follow criteria defined by its Commission and respect the standards of funding agencies such as Capes and CNPq.

This opportunity can facilitate students' full dedication to the course, a requirement for successful completion of the program.

Selection process at Fiocruz: deadlines and stages

    Why choose Fiocruz?

Studying at Fiocruz is a unique opportunity for those who want to immerse themselves in the world of science and the history of health.
