Foresea presented at ROG.e an innovative method of drilling pipe jig using ultrasonic technology to increase safety and efficiency in offshore drilling.
Foresea has unveiled a breakthrough technology that promises to revolutionize pipeline monitoring, bringing significant benefits to offshore drilling. Using ultrasonic waves, this new approach enables precise detection of obstructions, resulting in greater safety and efficiency during operations. The presentation took place at the latest ROG.e conference, highlighting Foresea’s leadership in the segment.
During the event, the offshore drilling company demonstrated how this pioneering technology can transform the current scenario, offering a robust solution to increase process accuracy. Foresea, recognized as a leader in Brazil, continues to drive significant advances in the industry. The use of ultrasonic techniques in the identification of tubular blocks is an important milestone for the safety of operations. These developments underscore Foresea’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in offshore drilling.
Foresea Event and Presentation
At one of the largest events in the Oil and Gas sector in Latin America, Foresea exhibited a innovative method for detecting obstructions in drilling pipes. The offshore drilling company presented its solution based on the use of ultrasonic waves associated with a developed algorithm specifically for the project. This methodology promises to offer greater precision, safety and efficiency for a critical procedure in offshore drilling: the jig drill pipes (drill pipes).
Obstruction Problems and Traditional Template
Any obstructions, such as solid debris, accumulations of drilling fluids such as mud, and sedimentary debris, can cause corrosion, structural damage, or even clog tools and drill jets. This can negatively affect operational performance and even cause serious failures and accidents. Currently, these problems are prevented by inspection using a physical template, manually inserted into the tubular sections of the platforms, generating operational risks and unwanted delays.
Partnership and Technological Research
Due to its importance in ensuring safety, the template is the focus of researchers seeking to improve the process. Together with the startup Offshore SPOT from Itajubá (MG), Foresea investigated several inspection techniques de drill pipes, including radiography and endoscopy. The ultrasound technology, however, proved to be the most advantageous—economical and requiring less complexity in application—offering precision, portability and efficient results.
How the SDG works
Called ODS (Obstruction Detection System), the gauge method using ultrasonic waves allows detecting obstructions in the pipeline, indicating the exact location and percentage of blockages. The waves used include ultrasonic wave columns longitudinal, transverse and torsional waves, which complement each other to provide a detailed image of the inside of the drill pipes. When they encounter an obstruction, the ultrasonic waves generate an echo, the analysis of which reveals the position and nature of the blockage.
Longitudinal ultrasonic waves travel through the pipe in the direction of initial propagation, while the torsion wave travels tangent to the pipe wall, aiding in the detection of partial obstructions. The degree of wave attenuation can even identify the type of material that is obstructing the pipe.
Future Promising Advances and Tests
Foresea is continuing with laboratory tests to further improve the interpretation of the waves generated by the ODS system. The next phase will include field tests to validate performance in real offshore operating conditions. Once implemented, the solution promises to bring precision, reliability and safety to the gauge. This pioneering project can in the future be extended to different types of vessels and equipment used in the offshore sector.
Conclusions and Acknowledgements from the Director of Innovation
“ODS is a major technological advancement that Foresea is proud to bring to the offshore industry,” says Alessandro Pasini, Innovation Manager and project coordinator. “It is a decisive contribution that we hope will be widely adopted.” With this technology, the industry can avoid operational failures and accidents, increasing efficiency and safety in drilling operations.
