About Samarco

Samarco Mineração is a mining company Brazilian company that was founded in 1977 and is currently controlled through a joint venture between Vale SA and the Anglo-Australian BHP Billiton, both with 50% of the company's shares. The concession for the area was transferred from Sociedade Anônima Mineradora Trindade (Samitri) to Samarco.

On November 5, 2015, Samarco gained worldwide prominence after being the protagonist of the biggest environmental disaster recorded in Brazil until then: the rupture of the dam in the city of Bento Rodrigues. The tailings dams were part of the Germano Mine, which is part of the so-called Complexo de Alegria, located in the Santa Rita Durão district of the municipality of Mariana, in the state of Minas Gerais.
