GasBrasiliano completes work on the Sustainable Cities project in the region of Presidente Prudente (SP)

On June 30, GasBrasiliano, the public concessionaire for the distribution of piped gas throughout the northwest of the State of São Paulo, completed the construction work on the gas distribution network for the “Sustainable Cities” project. The next stage of the project is the network commissioning period, a phase in which all equipment and technologies necessary for the insertion of biomethane into the network are activated prior to the start of distribution. This stage guarantees that the operation is able to be started in complete safety.

Launched in April 2019, at the 25th Agrishow – International Agricultural Technology Fair, held in Ribeirão Preto, the Project will place the municipalities of Narandiba, Pirapozinho and Presidente Prudente in the national spotlight with regard to the supply of biomethane generated from processing of sugarcane residues (vinasse, straw and filter cake), being the first exclusive network of this type of gas in Brazil.
A GasBrasiliano and Usina Cocal are partners in the initiative, the first being responsible for building the gas pipeline for the distribution of biomethane in the region and the second for producing biomethane, which can reach up to 25 m³/day. The project also has a partnership with the Secretariat of Infrastructure and Environment of the State of São Paulo (SIMA).
Approximately 51 kilometers of steel piping were built to connect the supply source (Usina Cocal, located in Narandiba) to the future consumer market (Narandiba, Pirapozinho and Presidente Prudente) and another 14,5 kilometers of polyethylene piping for connection to the industrial, commercial, residential and vehicular market located in the urban areas of these municipalities. The total investment in the project was R$ 180 million, of which R$ 30 million GasBrasiliano for the construction of the distribution network and R$ 150 million from Cocal in the construction of the plant for the production of biomethane.
“We are very satisfied with the completion of the works according to the project schedule. Even with the difficulties imposed by the pandemic and the challenges of building a distribution network with different levels of complexity as it passes through both rural and urban areas, today we celebrate the completion of this stage with great pride. It is a totally innovative project, which will promote energy diversity, competitiveness to the industry and encourage the expansion of the network in other regions", explains Alex Gasparetto, CEO of GasBrasiliano.
“This project highlights Cocal's commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) values in pursuit of the decarbonization of the Brazilian energy matrix. Biomethane is a green gas that represents one more contribution, in addition to ethanol, to the environment. We already have all the authorizations for the commercialization of this clean energy source and, soon, we will start together with the GasBrazilian the supply of the Presidente Prudente region via an isolated gas pipeline network”, says Paulo Zanetti, superintendent director of Cocal.
