Industrial & Commercial Transportation (ICT) participates with a high relevance in revenues in South America and stands out as a big business for TE Global
To meet the demands for more electronic components in the commercial vehicle and motorcycle industry, terminals, connectors and sensors company TE Connectivity created the Industrial & Commercial Transportation (ICT) business unit. The unit celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2022 with forecast investments in new technologies and a major expansion of business in the country.
The creation of ICT came after the acquisition, in 2012, of Deutsch, a specialist in high-performance connectors. Since then, there has been an understanding that the needs of the commercial vehicle industry – light and heavy trucks, buses, agricultural vehicles, recreational vehicles and motorcycles – are different from the needs of the automotive industry in many respects.
“TE's commercial vehicle customers were served as automotive and we saw that something needed to change, since this market demands more specific solutions, often to meet regionalized needs”, says Monica Biazon, director of automotive sales and marketing at TE South America. Over the years, this business unit has become responsible for manufacturing terminals and connectors, data connectivity cables, and relay and fuse boxes. It is also at the forefront of assembling high voltage systems and sensors and special cables for the new needs of this industry.

For Monica, one of the most important markets for ICT is Brazil. “Our country is a protagonist in the agricultural segment and, therefore, has a very relevant strategic role in the global scenario”, she explains.
Monica also recalls that, in the country, technologies in the agricultural sector are advancing at a rapid pace and that the volume of heavy vehicles follows the evolution of these technologies in South America. An example of this is the commercial vehicle electrification process. Especially in Brazil, the truck and bus market has been a protagonist in the electrification process, since it already has 100% electric vehicles produced in the country running in the largest shopping centers. “TE's role now is to look for regional solutions that allow the advance in the electrification of buses and trucks”, she says.
Projects and achievements
One of the major global projects that emerged from this TE division is the Deutsch line. Developed over the years with the main assemblers of agricultural and construction machinery, the line today leads the market of connections for applications in hostile environments. This has enabled the advancement of technology in precision agriculture, increased productivity in construction and mining, as well as the acceleration of the electrification process and customized solutions.
In Brazil, the highlights are the solutions in electrical connections that TE's ICT division developed for the eDelivery, a 100% electric light truck from Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus. Another highlight in the country is the work in partnership with the main local system providers, which increasingly allows the localization of content, through regional solutions such as the application of Data Connectivity components, High Voltage for electrification, relay and fuse boxes, special sensors and cables.
Expectations
For the coming years, TE's expectations regarding ICT are positive. The company foresees accelerated growth, to meet the need for emission reductions, as well as increased productivity in the agricultural segment (such as precision agriculture, reduction of pesticides and better use of the soil) and safety. It also provides for more comfort in the bus and truck segment, in addition to much more electronic technology incorporated into motorcycles (a booming market in Brazil) and electrification of vehicles in large urban centers.
