Considered the heart of the plant, the gas turbine that will be part of UTE GNA I is the most efficient of its kind to arrive in Brazil
GNA – Gas Natural Açu, a joint venture between Prumo Logística, BP and Siemens, took another important step in the construction of the largest natural gas thermoelectric complex in Latin America, totaling 3 GW. Last Tuesday, 30/4, the company received the first combined cycle gas turbine from UTE GNA I, the main piece of equipment that will make up the thermoelectric power plant.
Supplied by Siemens, the GT 13 gas turbine, model SGT6-8000H (class H), is the most efficient of its kind to arrive in Brazil. The equipment weighs around 291 tons, is 11 meters long, 4,8 meters high and will have a thermal capacity of 1,3 GW (considering three gas turbines).

The turbine shipped at the end of March, from the Port of Antwerp, in Belgium, directly to the Multicargo Terminal, located in the Port of Açu, inaugurating a new route between the two countries. At the end of the civil works, the turbine will be coupled to its base. The other turbines are expected to arrive at the Port of Açu in the coming months.
In all, the power island of UTE GNA I comprises three SGT6-8000H gas turbines, one steam turbine, in addition to three heat recovery generators, and instrumentation and control systems, equipment with a high level of efficiency that will generate a power of approximately 1,3 GW. In addition to implementation, the contract with Siemens includes the provision of long-term services for the plant's operation and maintenance.
“The arrival of the first turbine at UTE GNA I is another important milestone for the progress of our project. The thermoelectric complex that GNA is building in Porto do Açu will contribute to the diversification of Brazil's energy matrix and to energy security through natural gas, a reliable and affordable source of energy", says Bernardo Perseke, GNA's CEO.
Scheduled to start operations in January 2021, the GNA I UTE project consists of a 1,3 GW combined cycle natural gas thermoelectric plant, a LNG regasification terminal, with a capacity of 21 million cubic meters/day, a transmission line and a substation, which will connect the thermoelectric plant to the National Interconnected System (SIN).
To make the implementation of the project feasible, GNA entered into financing agreements with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), in the amount of US$ 288 million, and another, in the amount of R$ 1,76 billion, obtained from BNDES and KfW IPEX -Bank, responsible for financing the KfW Group's international and export projects, in an unprecedented partnership for the institutions.
In addition to UTE GNA I, the company will build UTE GNA II, with 1,7 GW of installed capacity. Together, the two thermoelectric plants add up to 3 GW, enough to supply around 14 million homes
GNA also has an environmental license to more than double its installed capacity, which could reach 6,4 GW, which will allow the development of additional thermoelectric projects in the future.
