DNIT reveals that 71% of Brazilian highways are in good condition, with emphasis on the Federal District, Goiás and Rondônia.
The National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) recently released the Maintenance Condition Index (ICM) for the month of June 2024. The index reveals that 71% of Brazilian highways are in good condition, the best record since 2016. This assessment offers a detailed view of the situation of roads in the country, based on paving and conservation data.
General index analysis
The ICM is a tool created by DNIT to measure the quality of highways under its responsibility.
The index is calculated based on two main components: the Paving Index (IP) and the Conservation Index (IC).

The IP evaluates aspects such as pans, patches and cracks, while the IC considers mowing, drainage, horizontal and vertical signage. Together, they determine the overall condition of highways.
According to the latest balance, 42,9 kilometers of highways were assessed as being in good traffic condition.
This represents a significant advance compared to previous years and reflects the ongoing effort to improve the infrastructure bus station in Brazil.
DNIT regional highlights
Some states stand out in the June report. The Federal District leads with the best average in the country, reaching 94% of its highways in good conditions.
This remarkable performance is attributed to significant investments in maintenance and improvements in the region.
Goiás also performs well, with 87% of its road network in good condition.
DNIT has been working actively in the state, carrying out the revitalization of 40 kilometers of BR-158/GO, in Jataí.
The improvements include milling, patching and asphalt microsurfacing services, which aim to increase the durability and safety of the roads.
The state of Rondônia is another highlight, reaching 86% in the latest survey. This year, Rondônia has a budget of more than R$592 million for maintenance and construction of highways.
These resources aim to further improve traffic on the region's roads. In Mato Grosso do Sul, 84% of highways are in good condition
The state is investing in the construction of the Três Lagoas Road Contour, a 26,4-kilometer project that aims to reduce travel time and increase user safety.
States with above-average ratings
In addition to the states already mentioned, others have also stood out positively. Alagoas presents 80% of its highways in good conditions, while Bahia achieved 76%.
Espírito Santo obtained the best evaluation among the states listed by DNIT, with 91% of its roads in good condition.
Mato Grosso has 78% of its highways in good condition, and Pará reached 73%. Paraíba also stands out, with 82% of its roads well evaluated.
In Paraná, 77% of highways are in good condition, while Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro have 81% and 90%, respectively.
Rio Grande do Norte and Rio Grande do Sul have ratings of 77% and 74%, respectively.
São Paulo, which has the largest population and an extensive road system, received a rating of 92%.
Tocantins completed the list with 83% of its highways in good condition.
Future perspectives of DNIT
Fabrício Galvão, general director of DNIT, highlighted the importance of investments in infrastructure road for the safety and comfort of drivers.
“DNIT has more than R$12 billion in budget for road maintenance in 2024 alone. Therefore, our objective is to work with full force to end the year with an even greater ICM, providing conditions for Brazilian citizens to travel in comfort and security in every corner of our country”, stated Galvão.
The ICM report is an important reference for monitoring DNIT's actions and helps direct investments and priorities for highway maintenance.
The index is calculated based on field surveys and classifies each segment into four categories: terrible, bad, fair or good.
The positive evolution in the indices is a reflection of continuous efforts to improve Brazil's road infrastructure and ensure that roads offer adequate conditions for safe and efficient traffic.
