A R$5,1 billion investment promises to transform the roads of this Brazilian state. The PE na Estrada, launched by Governor Raquel Lyra, will bring improvements to 3,5 kilometers of highways. Will the ambitious project overcome environmental and political barriers, or will it remain on paper?

Get ready for a radical change on the roads of Pernambuco, but without knowing all the details yet.

The state government has just announced a billion dollar program which promises to improve the lives of drivers, bringing hope to those who face deteriorated roads every day.

This major project is already mobilizing the population and authorities, but the challenges are as many as the promises.

The PE on the Road program It was officially launched on October 23, 2024, by Governor Raquel Lyra (PSDB).

The objective is to recover Pernambuco's road network, one of the most problematic in the country, with an impressive investment of R$5,1 billion, which includes both state and federal resources.

The plan is to requalify and build 3,5 kilometers of roads, covering from the coast to the hinterland of Pernambuco.

The government's promise is that, over the next few years, the roads will be passable again, offering greater safety and fluidity for traffic.

The highlight is the implementation of the southern section of the Metropolitan Arch, also known as Lot 2, located in Greater Recife.

In addition, the program provides for the requalification of 120 kilometers of BR-232, an important road that connects the capital, Recife, to São Caetano, in Agreste.

The government has also already signaled future duplications of BR-232, which will extend from São Caetano to Arcoverde, reaching Serra Talhada, in the backlands of the state..

Larger investments than previous projects

Compared to previous programs, the PE on the Road presents a significantly higher investment.

According to the governor, the resources allocated exceed the R$4 billion destined for “Caminhos de Pernambuco” and “Caminhos da Integração”, launched in the four previous state administrations of the PSB.

This new project not only exceeds the values, but is also seen as a necessary and urgent restructuring, given the precariousness of the roads.

According to experts, the Requalification of BR-232 is essential for the economic development of the state, since this highway is one of the main connections between the capital and the interior of Pernambuco.

With a complete duplication, the capacity for transporting goods and passengers will be expanded, benefiting both the production sector and tourism.

Lot 2 of the Metropolitan Arch: less controversial, but crucial

The Metropolitan Arch is one of the most important and controversial points of this project.

Lot 2, in the South, should be the first to get off the ground, as it does not face as many environmental and legal barriers..

This part of the arch is crucial to relieving traffic in Greater Recife, and has been awaited for many years.

However, Lot 1, which connects Paudalho to Goiana and crosses the Aldeia-Beberibe Environmental Protection Area (APA), still has no start date set.

The design of this section is the subject of intense debate due to the environmental impact it may cause.

The program launch event PE on the Road It was attended by mayors, state and federal deputies, strengthening the political position of Governor Raquel Lyra.

She took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of the project and ensure that resources are guaranteed.

“We are not here just signing papers. These resources are guaranteed,” said the governor, demonstrating confidence in the project’s execution..

Priority works and the population's reaction

The governor highlighted that 88 works are already in progress or in the design phase.

The population, which has long had to deal with potholed roads in poor condition, is anxiously awaiting the start of the promised improvements.

Despite the confidence demonstrated by Raquel Lyra, some critics are cautious about meeting deadlines and allocating resources appropriately.

The truth is that, although the program brings ambitious promises, there is no shortage of challenges.

The recovery of roads in Pernambuco will require rigorous planning, efficient execution and supervision to ensure that the works are completed on time and with the expected quality.

The governor, however, is optimistic and confident in the success of the initiative.

The economic impact expected by the government

The requalification of Pernambuco's roads should generate positive impacts on the local economy, facilitating the transportation of products, especially agricultural products, and increasing the flow of tourists to cities in the interior.

With highways in better condition, the state can expect a reduction in transportation costs and an increase in the competitiveness of local companies., in addition to encouraging tourism in destinations that were previously inaccessible due to road conditions.

However, the governor still needs to resolve the environmental dispute involving Lot 1 of the Metropolitan Arch, which is vitally important for relieving traffic in the metropolitan region of Recife.

The area of environmental protection is a significant obstacle, and any progress in this direction will require complex negotiations between authorities and environmentalists.

The future of Pernambuco's roads is at stake, and the success of the program PE on the Road could be a turning point for Raquel Lyra's management.

The expectation of improvements to the roads increases pressure on the government, which will have to show concrete results in the coming years.

Will the project be able to overcome the political, environmental and technical barriers? Time will tell.
