Significant increase in electric car sales in the first quarter of 2023
The eletric cars in Brazil has shown impressive growth in recent months, with record sales and an increase in the fleet. In March 2023 alone, 5.989 units of electrified light vehicles were registered, an increase of 55,5% compared to the same period of the previous year, according to the Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles (ABVE).
In the first quarter of 2023, 14.787 light electric vehicles were sold, an increase of 50% compared to the first quarter of 2022. These numbers confirm the sector's growth trend in Brazil.
Impact of electric cars on the Brazilian energy matrix
Despite the expressive growth, experts believe that the increase in sales of electric cars will not cause a significant impact on the national energy matrix.

Ricardo David, managing partner of Elev, a company specialized in solutions for the electromobility, states that there is no reason to worry, since the country's electricity demand would still be within the available energy production capacity.
The growth of hybrid vehicles and electrification in Brazil
Another segment that has boosted the electrified vehicle market in Brazil is non-plug-in hybrid vehicles (HEV), especially flex-fuel models powered by ethanol. In March 2023, 3.230 units of HEV light vehicles were registered, 2.272 of which were flex-fuel hybrids (ethanol fueled) and 958 gasoline hybrids. This scenario is extremely positive for reducing the impact of combustion vehicles on the environment.
Ricardo David believes that hybrids powered by electricity and ethanol will gain more and more popularity in Brazil, mainly because they are a sustainable alternative with little environmental impact, in addition to being ideal transition models for a 100% electric future in the country.
To further expand the growth of the electric car sector, David highlights the importance of national planning and a framework for electrification in Brazil. He emphasizes the need for automakers to seek solutions for electrification, the increase of electric fleets in companies and the structural improvement of recharge.
The electric car market in Brazil has been growing significantly, with a significant increase in sales in the first quarter of 2023. Despite this, experts say that the impact on the national energy matrix is still limited and that the sector has room to continue to grow. The advancement of hybrid vehicles and electrification in the country are key aspects for building a more sustainable future, requiring planning and
