Safety comes first: learn the essential steps before, during and after using a chainsaw

Use a chainsaw It may seem simple, but it requires attention, preparation and care for safety. Whether it is cutting trees, pruning branches or carrying out maintenance work, construction, it is essential to understand how to handle the equipment correctly.

A chainsaw It is one of the most effective and also most dangerous tools for anyone working with wood.

Whether it is for cutting branches, felling trees or clearing areas of land, it requires extra attention and correct use from the very beginning. Therefore, understanding how to handle it safely is essential — and can prevent serious accidents.

Why chainsaw requires extreme care

A chainsaw works by using a chain that rotates at high speed over a guide bar. This chain is sharp and capable of cutting through wood quickly, but it can also cause serious accidents if the tool gets out of control.

The biggest risk is the so-called “recoil“, which occurs when the top tip of the blade hits something solid and the saw moves violently backwards, towards the operator.

Even lighter, more modern models made for home use carry this risk.

Therefore, following instructions, using protective equipment and respecting the tool's limits is essential in any operation.

Before you start your chainsaw: what you need to know

It doesn't matter if your chainsaw is electric or gasoline-powered. Before using it, some precautions are mandatory. One of them is never operate the tool alone. If something goes wrong, someone else's presence can be the difference between life and death.

If you are in a remote area, such as a forest, place flags near your car and let someone know where and when you will return. Bring a First aid kit complete, with coagulation dressing.

We also pack any always use protective equipment: helmet with visor, leggings, gloves, tight clothing and steel toe boots. Loose clothing can be pulled by the current and cause accidents.

Position, support and preparation are essential

The ideal position is with both feet firmly on the ground, holding the chainsaw with both hands. Ideally, the tool should be held at a slight angle, at the side of the body, rather than directly in front of it. This position helps control kickback if it occurs.

Never use a chainsaw on ladders or above shoulder height. For high branches, the ideal tool is a rope saw, known as a “pocket chainsaw.”

Pay attention to the environment before starting to cut

Observe the work area carefully. Identify escape routes in case the tree falls in an unexpected direction.

Check for the presence of power lines, carros, housing ou people close to you —keep a distance of at least two and a half times the height of the tree.

Preparing the chainsaw: from fuel to chain tension

Put on your protective equipment and check the current tension. It should be tight, but not rigid. A loose chain can slip off the bar and cause injury.

If your chainsaw is gasoline-powered, check and fill the tank with the correct mixture of gasoline and two-stroke oil. The standard ratio is 50:1 — about 76 ounces of oil for every 4 gallon of gasoline.

Also fill the reservoir with chain lubrication oil, essential for the proper functioning of the saw and to avoid premature wear.

How to start a chainsaw safely

Place the chainsaw on the ground, turn on the chain brake and prepare the choke, if the model is gasoline-powered. Press the primer button between four and six times, and then pull the starter lever while holding the saw with your foot.

Electric models do not require these steps: simply press the safety button and the on/off switch. The chain only starts to rotate when you press the accelerator.

Time to cut: control and technique are everything

With the saw running, position yourself correctly. Release the chain brake and apply full throttle. Let the saw “pull” the wood itself — never force it.

The cut must be firm, constant, with the accelerator pressed at all times. Release the trigger only when finished or when removing the saw from the cut.

When finished, safely turn off.

To turn off, move the ignition key to the “off” position. Then let the tool cool before storing. If the saw is gasoline-powered and will not be used again soon, it is best to drain the fuel.

Never dispose of gasoline on the ground or in regular trash. Take the liquid to a mechanic or dispose of it according to local regulations. To drain completely, turn on the saw after draining and let the engine run until it stops due to lack of fuel.

Always store the tool in a box or with a protective cover, in a dry and ventilated place.

Maintenance: essential for safety and durability

Correct usage is important, but regular maintenance ensures that the chainsaw works well and safely. Here's what needs to be done frequently:

  • Check the current tension before each use;
  • Sharpen the chain after every three or four tanks used, or sooner if necessary;
  • Clean the chain and guide bar with solvent and brush;
  • Check the air filter frequently and replace if very dirty;
  • ensure that the fuel mixture be in the correct proportion.

Always consult the manufacturer's manual, as each model may have specific recommendations for use, maintenance and fuel mixture ratio. Following these instructions is essential to maintain performance and avoid technical problems.

Safety is never too much

Chainsaws are useful but dangerous tools. The risk of accidents is real and should not be underestimated. Many users make simple mistakes — such as cutting overhead, wearing loose clothing, or failing to check chain tension — and pay dearly for it.

Therefore, prevention is the best cut you can make. Training, caution and the use of the correct equipment are essential in any situation.

Even after use, care must be taken. Proper storage prevents deterioration of the chain and accidents involving anyone who may have access to the tool. Always clean, empty (when necessary) and store it in a protected place.

The chainsaw, although practical and efficient, is one of the most dangerous tools available to the public without the need for a license. Therefore, respecting each step of the process — from preparation to shutdown — is part of the job. A simple oversight can cause irreversible damage.

For those who follow each instruction carefully, the benefit is clear: a powerful tool, used with control and responsibility.
