ICN of Itaguaí will do submarine sea test
Itaguaí's first submarine will be tested

The first of the four submarines in the Prosub program will begin, this August, in Itaguaí, sea operation tests

The ICN shipyard (Itaguaí Construções Navais), a joint venture between the Naval Group and Odebrecht Engenharia e Construção, informed the Brazilian Navy that the sea trials of the first of the four diesel-electric attack submarines S-BR (modified Scorpène class) ) of the Submarine Development Program (Prosub), will start this August.
The sea trial of the vessel and its equipment is expected to last until the first half of 2020, while the commissioning of the submarine is scheduled for October 2020.

The tests

The Brazilian navy informed that not only the submarine's equipment will be tested, the Sea Trial will also serve to test the launch of a 21 mm F533 heavy torpedo from Naval Group and a mock-up of an MBDA Exocet SM39 Block 2 anti-ship missile Mod 2.

It is worth remembering that the Submarine (S-40) named “Riachuelo”, was launched at the Itaguaí Naval Shipyard on December 14, 2018 and is equipped with weapons capable of patrolling areas where the pre-salt will be explored.

As already reported by Click Petróleo e Gás, the construction works for the submarines in Itaguaí are well advanced and the four sections of the hull of the second submarine, the “Humaitá” are already in the ICN, coming from UFEM, which is also located in Itaguaí.

Prosub foresees the construction of four submarines, after the Riachuelo will come the Humaitá (S41), scheduled for launch in 2020, the Tonelero (S42) in 2021 and the Angostura (S43) in 2022.

A fifth unit is planned, but its propulsion will be nuclear and the project that will also be executed at the Itaguaí Shipyard is going from strength to strength.

ICN and NUCLEP are heading towards another industrial leap by joining forces to manufacture the first qualification section of the SN-BR Álvaro Alberto, the first nuclear-powered submarine in Latin America.
