WasteShark robot is the name of the new technology capable of removing 21 plastic bottles of garbage a day from rivers

The WasteShark robot, developed by Dutch startup RanMarine Technology, is revolutionizing garbage collection in rivers and bodies of water. All-electric and inspired by the shape of a whale shark, this technology can remove up to 21 thousand plastic bottles a day, as well as microplastics, oils and other debris, helping to keep aquatic environments cleaner and healthier.

According to Sagres, the new technology is known as “aquadrone”, being an agile and compact robot shaped like a catamaran boat. Its creation was driven by RanMarine Technology founder Richard Hardiman's goal to make garbage collection more efficient and sustainable. The whale shark-inspired design allows the robot to easily navigate rivers and hard-to-reach areas, collecting an impressive amount of debris.

Robot garbage collection efficiency and capability

Equipped with a long-lasting battery, the WasteShark can operate for eight to ten hours non-stop. During this period, technology has the capacity to collect up to 500 kg of debris per day, equivalent to around 21 plastic bottles. After completing its journey, the robot returns to shore to recharge its battery and offload the collected waste, ensuring it is always ready to clean again.

This technology is an environmentally friendly solution, as it does not generate polluting emissions during its operations. Furthermore, it can be programmed remotely, optimizing your collection routes. Its performance is especially relevant in ports, docks, canals and estuaries, where the accumulation of garbage is common. The robot's main objective is to prevent garbage from reaching the ocean, preserving marine ecosystems.

Contribution to scientific research and technology

In addition to pulling garbage out of rivers, WasteShark plays an important role in collecting data for scientific research. The robot takes small water samples while collecting debris, allowing researchers to assess water quality, identify possible algal blooms and monitor environmental changes.

The rubbish cleaner robot recently underwent testing at the Canary Wharf commercial building complex in London, UK. This initiative demonstrates how the aquadrone can be a valuable tool for companies that seek more sustainable solutions and are committed to preserving the environment.

Technology and preservation of the environment

WasteShark is a notable example of how technology can make a significant contribution to preserving the environment. With its impressive ability to collect garbage and operate in hard-to-reach places, the robot stands out as an efficient tool in the fight against pollution of rivers and seas. By adopting solutions like WasteShark, companies can demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and be part of the global movement towards a cleaner, more environmentally responsible future.
