Niterói City Hall work will favor the recovery of the shipbuilding industry and port activities, resources would come from royalties
The Municipality of Niterói has just announced that it will dredge the São Lourenço Channel, which will increase its draft from 7 meters to 12 meters.
With the dredging, the port will have the capacity to receive large ships, increasing repair activities and the offshore sector, in addition to expanding port activities.
The work is budgeted at R$ 200 million and would be carried out with resources from the royalties that the municipality receives.
The work schedule is being discussed between the municipal secretaries Giovanna Victer (Finance) and Luiz Paulino Moreira Leite (Economic Development) and the director of the National Institute of Waterway Research (INPH), Domenico Accetta.

essential work
The Niterói farm secretary stated that “The dredging of the São Lourenço Channel is one of the main factors for the recovery of the shipbuilding industry and the resumption of jobs in the sector”.
“We want to leverage the economy and, above all, create new job opportunities in the city. For this, we will make an investment using resources from royalties. The return for the Municipality will be enormous, both in the generation of jobs and in technology, with the reopening of a market that is facing serious difficulties”.
This is not the only action taken by the municipality aimed at recovering shipbuilding, which for many years played a prominent role in the local economy.
The City Hall is promising to present a Strategic Development Plan for the Naval Sector by August this year, a study carried out in partnership with Nit Negócios, an investment promotion agency in Niterói.
The idea of the study is to analyze the investments and the full potential of the naval industry for the next 20 years and the participation of NIT Negócios is essential.
As stated by its director Marcelo Haddad, “With this perspective, we will advance with prospecting work for nautical industries and shipowners of the most diverse nationalities for the city. It will be the moment of commercial capture”.
