Gas aid is regulated and intended for low-income families as a way to alleviate the price of cooking gas

Every two months, the benefited families will receive an amount equivalent to 50% of the average national reference price for the last six months for a 13-kilogram gas cylinder. The National Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuel Agency (ANP) is the body that will establish this reference value.

The decree establishing Gas Aid was signed by the President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, last Thursday, November 2, regulating Law No. 14.237, of November 19, 2021. The information was published in the Official Gazette , on Friday (3).

The purpose of the Gas Aid is to mitigate the effect of the price charged for cooking gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), on the budget that low-income families have available.

The aid will be directed to families enrolled in the Single Registry for Social Programs, who have a monthly per capita family income equal to or less than half the minimum wage. In addition, families in which one of the members earns the Continued Cash Benefit (BPC) will also receive.

According to the established law, the aid will also be attributed, preferably, to families that have women victims of domestic violence and who are under the monitoring of urgent protective measures.

In addition, the decree that regularizes the law informs that the preferential concession will be based on access to information contained in the database maintained by the National Council of Justice.

The General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic published, in a note, that “The importance of this prioritization cannot be denied, since this public often goes through the worsening of their financial condition due to the removal of the aggressor from the home and the consequent subtraction of their contribution to family income. Thus, the forecast seeks to facilitate the access of women in situations of violence to the transfer of financial amounts that will contribute to family expenses.”

The decree also makes it possible for the benefit to be implemented as of December 2021, as the goal is to reduce the effect of the increase in the price of cooking gas on the capital of low-income families.

This will be done, considering the moment of economic difficulty that the country has been going through as a result of the Covid-19 virus pandemic.
