Meet Latam

The airline Latam had a history full of pioneering spirit and challenge. In 1929, the creation of LAN “Companhia Aérea Nacional de Chile” took place, made by Commander Arturo Merino Benítez.

In 1946, there was the first international flight (Santiago – Buenos Aires). Time passed and in 1956, they opened operations for Lima. Lan starts operations to Miami, in the United States in mid-1958. It was created by TAM – Táxi Aéreo Marília, by five charter flight pilots, in 1961.

After offering flights to Europe, having the foundation of TAM Transportes Aéreos Regionais, starting TAM services in Brazilian cities (especially in São Paulo and Mato Grosso), LAN became a corporation in 1985. In 1996, TAM bought the company Lapsa, from the Paraguayan government and created TAM Mercosur, soon after, in the same year, São Paulo – Asunción flights began.

In 2014, TAM leaves Star Alliance and joins oneworld, which becomes the global alliance of LATAM Airlines Group. Finally, in 2015, the LATAM, the new brand adopted by LAN and TAM and their subsidiaries. In 2017, the new business model was implemented in (inter)national markets. In the year 2019, the LATAM airlines Group and Delta Air Lines announced a strategic alliance, bringing together two leading airlines in North America and Latin America. Finally, in 2020 LATAM leaves the oneworld alliance.
