SP government opens 1,5 free places in Libras course

According to the Government of the State of São Paulo, an excellent opportunity is available for those who have always wanted to learn Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), but never knew where to start.

In partnership with the Virtual University of the State of São Paulo (Univesp), the government opened 1,5 places for completely free and online Libras courses.

The action is part of a larger movement called “School of Inclusion”, a project that aims to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in society, especially deaf people.

The objective of the Libras course

The introductory course in Libras aims to provide a basic understanding of the language and allow hearing people to communicate with the deaf community efficiently.

With more than 592 thousand deaf people throughout the state of São Paulo, according to estimates from the Observatory for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the initiative stands out for its importance in facilitating communication between deaf and hearing people, promoting social inclusion and accessibility.

Furthermore, the training is available to anyone over the age of 18, which further expands the possibilities of who can benefit from the course.

It is worth noting that the classes will be taught by deaf teachers, who have training in the area and offer a more authentic and enriching learning experience.

Comprehensive and rich content

Throughout the course, students will learn not only signs, but also fundamental concepts related to deaf culture and the nuances involved in communication between deaf and hearing people. The course includes topics such as:

  • What is Libras?
  • Deaf identity and deaf culture
  • Communication differences: deaf vs. hearing
  • Regionalisms and variations of sign language
  • Manual alphabet and personal signs
  • Greetings and salutations
  • Weather conditions, days of the week, feelings, professions, verbs and much more.

These topics are covered with the help of recorded videos, making learning easier and allowing students to improve at their own pace.

How to register for the course To secure your place on this transformative course, registrations will be open from today, January 15th, at 10 am, and can be made directly on the SEDPcD (Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities) website.

The registration process is simple and quick, and once registered, participants will have free access to Libras classes, being able to follow them whenever and wherever they want.

More about the School of Inclusion

Created in 2024, the “School of Inclusion” has the mission of promoting the active participation of people with different types of disabilities in the educational environment.

In addition to Libras courses, the platform offers other forms of training for people with hearing, visual, intellectual and motor disabilities, ensuring that everyone has the right to learn, develop and interact fully in society.

The impact of learning Libras

Brazilian Sign Language is not just a language for communication; it is also a powerful tool for inclusion.

By learning Libras, you will be contributing to a future where communication barriers between deaf and hearing people become increasingly smaller, promoting more respect, empathy and social equality.

If you’ve always wanted to learn Libras, now is the time! Don’t miss out on the chance to be part of this transformation, to promote inclusion and to gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of this rich language.

The course is free, online and accessible, with classes taught by deaf teachers who provide a truly immersive experience in learning sign language. Take advantage of the opportunity and register now on the SEDPcD website.
