In an inclusive initiative, the government is offering 1.120 places for a free online Libras course. Classes, taught by deaf teachers, will begin soon and will include 40 hours of content and certification.
In an effort to promote inclusion and bring people from the deaf community even closer together, the Government of Sรฃo Paulo announced a unique and free opportunity to learn Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) from your own home.
This month, 1.120 places are available for an online course endorsed by the Ministry of Education, with interactive classes taught by deaf teachers.
But don't waste time, places are limited and each class promises a valuable immersion in an essential language to communicate with the more than 590 thousand deaf people in the state.

Registration for the Libras course
According to the State Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (SEDPcD), the basic Libras course was designed for people over 18 years of age who wish to acquire knowledge about the language and deaf culture.
Registration opened in early November and will continue until all vacancies are filled.
This initiative aims to serve both those interested in expanding their communication skills and professionals who deal with the deaf public, expanding accessibility in different areas.
Online modality and workload
The course, which takes place entirely online, offers 40 hours of learning, of which 30 hours are live classes held via the Zoom platform, while the remaining 10 hours are dedicated to complementary activities and reinforcement of the content.
Classes will be divided into 16 different groups, with time options on different days: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; Tuesdays and Thursdays; and Saturdays, which allows flexibility for those with other commitments.
To participate, you must have internet access and a camera to follow the classes live, as interaction and practice are essential for learning.
At the end of the course, participants who achieve a minimum attendance of 75% in live classes and a final average of at least 5,0 will receive a certificate of completion.
Topics covered in the course
The course topics cover a wide range of essential topics for those who are just starting out in the world of Libras. Students will be exposed to subjects such as:
- Introduction to Libras and its importance;
- Deaf identity and culture;
- Differences in communication between deaf and hearing people;
- Regionalisms and variations in Libras;
- Manual alphabet and personal signs;
- Greeting expressions and weather conditions;
- Basic vocabulary about time, numbers and feelings;
- Notions of family, professions, documents and facial expressions;
- Verbs and handshapes used in the language.
This set of topics ensures that students have a basic and practical understanding of Libras, facilitating more inclusive and respectful communication.
Classes with deaf teachers
One of the highlights of the course is that classes are taught by deaf teachers, providing a more authentic experience of deaf culture and an opportunity to learn directly from those who use Libras as their main language.
This interaction allows students to practice directly with those who are immersed in the language, making learning more dynamic and engaging.

According to official data, the state of Sรฃo Paulo is home to more than 590 deaf people, and knowledge of Libras is becoming increasingly necessary in a context of inclusion.
