Salaries range from 4 to 30 reais per month for those with maritime training in Brazil and education from elementary school onwards.
Salaries of employees working in marine units and the knowledge of the oceans has been attracting many people to work on platforms and ships, but commonly called “Offshore”. Studies say that this branch is very broad and tends to remain here in Brazil. But those who think that entering this professional career is as easy as that are wrong.
First of all, you must know which profession you want to dedicate yourself to: Officer or Sailor. Regardless of whether they are companies in the private or public sector, both careers must undergo training and authorization from the Navy, which has the Maritime Professional Education Program (Prepom).
FOR oficiais, salaries generally start at 10 reais and can reach 30 reais for commander positions. In Brazil, only two teaching institutions offer the course: CIAGA, located in Rio de Janeiro, and Ciabá, in Belém (entrance takes place through a public tender only). That's why the majority of professionals in these functions are from Rio de Janeiro and Pará.

The two institutions teach courses for Machinery Officers and Navigation Officers and there are two ways to enter this market. After finishing the course, the student is REQUIRED TO SHIP FOR 1 YEAR, with a rest period of 30 days. A lot of people can't adapt to maritime life and end up abandoning their career.
1st way to enter
The first way to enter is to do the Efomm (Merchant Marine Officer Training School). Must be at most 23 years old, approved and take the course for 36 months (3 years). Upon completion, you will graduate with a Bachelor of Nautical Sciences.
During the period of study, the aspiring seafarer will be in a military environment, that is, in an interned regime and with a scholarship of a little more than one salary monthly and at the end of the course, a “payment” is received according to the criterion of the current year. In 2014 this difference in pay was 20 thousand reais. The student who has a university degree will be able to take a leveling test, eliminate subjects and reduce the course time, usually for just one year.
2st way to enter
For the position of sailor, salaries start at 4 thousand reais in maritime regime. The simplest way is to take the Waterway Workers Course (cfaq), in some Navy headquarters throughout Brazil they teach this course that lasts from 3 to 6 months. You must have elementary school, take a test, and be recommended by any company in the segment to do an internship to guarantee your job later on.
If you have professional training in Mechanics, Electrics, Cooking, Nursing and cabin crew, you could be taking the Professional Adaptation Course (Caac), also taught by the Navy and go to embrace it, because the salary is much better than that of sailors and deckhands. To see open tenders, go to the Navy website (www.mar.mil.br) or trade unions (Sindmar for officers and National Union of Sailors and Boys in Maritime Transport).
