New hybrid SUV offers exceptional fuel consumption of 21,7 km/l, leaving Corolla Cross and Renegade behind
Renault's latest SUV, the Symbioz, arrives to strengthen the French manufacturer's presence in the competitive SUV segment, where Renault already has established models. With plans to launch a new SUV in Brazil, superior to the Duster, the Symbioz can give clues as to what to expect in the national market.
Design and aesthetics of the Symbioz SUV
From a design point of view, the Symbioz has several features that could be reminiscent of the updated European Renault Captur, especially at the front. The configuration of the grille and LED headlights are practically the same, and the front lights also refer to the Captur. A Symbioz distinction can be noticed in the roofline at the rear, which offers a hint of coupe styling, albeit a subtle one.
Dimensions and internal space
In terms of size, the Symbioz stands out from Renault's other options in the segment. Measuring 4,41 m in length, this SUV is part of the complete E-Tech (hybrid) range, which also includes the Arkana (4,57 m) and Austral (4,51 m); now, customers also have all-electric options like the Megane and Scenic. For comparison, the Jeep Compass measures 4,40 m long.

The Symbioz is slightly longer than the new Captur, but the wheelbase is the same. This results in increased luggage space for the Symbioz, which has 629 liters when the rear seat is moved forward (approximately 16 cm), thanks to a seat that slides on rails. Typically, the loading capacity is 492 liters. The model also offers the convenience of an electric trunk opening.
Convenience and connectivity
Internally, the Symbioz offers 24,7 liters of space in compartments on the passenger side, including 7 liters in the glove box alone. The connectivity for mobile devices also stands out, with two USB-C connectors at the front and two more at the back. On higher trim models, an induction smartphone charger is a standard feature.
Innovations in sunroof and mechanics
The SUV is also equipped with AmpliSky, a curtainless sunroof with an active system that can become opaque in segments as desired by the driver using PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) technology.
Mechanically, the Symbioz SUV is less powerful than other Renault models. It comes with a single E-Tech Full Hybrid mechanical option, a conventional hybrid, offering a total power of 145 hp. This hybrid system combines two electric motors (a 36 kW main motor and an 18 kW high voltage starter generator (HSG)) and a 1.6 hp 94 four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 1,2 kWh battery. The transmission is a clutchless Intelligent Multimode gearbox, which has four gears for the gasoline engine and two for the main electric drive.
Cutting-edge technology and driver assistance are available in this SUV
This system is similar to that found in the fully hybrid Clio E-Tech and the new fully hybrid Captur E-Tech. Symbioz introduces the new E-Save function, activated via a button on the left side of the steering wheel, which optimizes fuel consumption by keeping the battery charge above 40%. Renault states that the average fuel consumption of the Symbioz is 21,7 km/l.
Inside, the Symbioz offers the latest technology, including the openR link multimedia system with Google integrated in the Techno version, based on Android Automotive 12. It is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, with or without a cable. The central touchscreen is 10,4 inches, standard on all versions, while the digital instrument panel in front of the driver measures 10,3 inches.
The Symbioz SUV also comes with an extensive range of driver assistance systems (ADAS) with up to 29 different technologies. Among the highlights are Active Driver Assist (level 2 assistance) and intelligent speed adaptation, mainly in relation to the 'Stop & Go' adaptive cruise control, the lane keeping system and the sign recognition system.
The automatic emergency braking system in reverse gear, which works between 3 and 10 km/h, is also an important feature. A new “My Safety Switch” button on the left side of the steering wheel allows the driver to activate or deactivate their preferred settings for six ADAS or parking functions, with the aid of a 360° vision camera, front, rear and side sensors, alert Rear Cross Traffic Control (RCTA) or Occupant Safe Exit (OSE).
Production and Availability
The Renault Symbioz SUV will be produced on the brand's assembly line in Valladolid, Spain. So far, four versions have been announced: Techno, Spirit Alpine and Iconic. Prices have not yet been released, but the deliveries are scheduled to begin in Europe in the second half of 2024.
I liked it and I was interested in knowing the approximate price.
I would like to see the possibility of seeing one and the price in July if possible.
