A mega investment in the new Great Wall Motors factory is shaking up the automotive industry and leaving competitors apprehensive. Find out when the GWM unit will come into operation and what new things it will bring to the market.

MEGA investment alert: After a careful readjustment of the portfolio of products to be nationalized, Great Wall Motors (GWM) officially announced the start of its production in Brazil. The new factory, located in Iracemápolis, São Paulo, will begin operating in the last quarter of 2024. Although the original schedule predicted the start of activities in May this year, the company chose to adjust its plans to ensure that the products offered in the Brazilian automotive industry are perfectly aligned with the needs and expectations of local consumers.

This massive investment in Iracemápolis represents a significant milestone for GWM, which seeks to consolidate its presence in the competitive Brazilian automotive market. The factory will be responsible for producing vehicles with advanced technology and a focus on sustainability, including hybrid and electric models, which are expected to revolutionize the segment.

With the operation scheduled for the end of 2024, the Great Wall Motors positions itself as a strong competitor, bringing innovation and quality to the Brazilian automotive market. Stay tuned for news and get ready to discover the models that will soon be available in dealerships across the country.

Understand the reason for postponing the mega investment from GWM

With the change in strategy, the automotive industry giant had to postpone the schedule by about six months. The postponement of the new Great Wall Motors factory occurred due to the gradual return of the Import Tax to electrified and hybrid vehicles, which began in January this year, and the announcement of the Mover automotive program, which aims to encourage the local production of vehicles with lower pollutant emissions.

As already announced by GWM itself, the first product or products to be assembled will be unibody SUVs from the Haval line, built from the LMN platform and with DHT hybrid powertrain, completely changing the automotive industry.

However, there is still no definition of what the model will be, or whether there will be more than one simultaneously at the new Great Wall Motors factory. What is certain is that it will be an SUV from the Haval family. The H6, already sold in Brazil, is one of the candidates, but there are also chances that it will be the H4, a new medium SUV.

The new Great Wall Motors (GWM) factory on Brazilian soil

GWM, with its mega investment, is ahead of competitors in the automotive industry such as BYD and will be the first automaker in China to produce vehicles in Brazil. In August 2021, the vehicle company consolidated itself in the Brazilian market after purchasing the former Mercedes-Benz factory in the interior of São Paulo. Shortly afterwards, an investment in the order of R$10 billion, including the possibility of producing electric cars on national soil.

In the first phase of the investment, which began last year and continues until 2025, the automaker injected R$4 billion to adapt and expand the new Great Wall Motors factory in Iracemápolis (SP). The plan is to expand the factory's production capacity to up to 100 thousand vehicles annually. According to data from the automaker, the plant should also generate around 2 jobs when operating at full capacity.

Possible vehicles that will be produced at the new Great Wall Motors factory

In any case, GWM is racing to have its national products started manufacturing with flex hybrid engines. Both the H6 As for the H4, their powertrain is based on a 1.5 turbo four-cylinder, 16-valve engine with direct injection and Miller cycle. Combined with it are one or two electric traction motors, with powers ranging between 243 hp and 393 hp.

The Poer medium pickup truck and the Tank 500 seven-seater SUV, initially scheduled to open operations in the mega investment in Iracemápolis in May, were postponed to 2025 and will undergo updates before their respective launches.

In addition to the nationalized Haval SUVS, Poer Pickup and the Tank 500 SUV, GWM will continue to bring imported vehicles to the Brazilian Automotive Industry, such as electric vehicles from the Ora brand, hybrid jeeps from Tank and hybrid SUVs with a more luxurious feel from another brand sold in China, the Wey.
