Expansion of electric car plant in Camaçari, Bahia, reflects growth in demand in the Brazilian market
Chinese automaker BYD, which had already announced a significant investment in Brazil, is about to further increase its stake in the country. As growing interest of the Brazilian market in electric and hybrid vehicles, the company decided expand its original project in Bahia for a total of R$6,5 billion. The information was revealed by Senator Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), leader of the government in the Federal Senate, in an interview with Antena 1 radio, signaling that an official announcement from BYD is expected soon, according to the Insideevs website.
Demand-driven investment expansion
The main driver for this new investment is the increase in imports of BYD vehicles to Brazil, observed in recent months. This unexpected growth in sales has caused the automaker to revise its initial plans, who already planned to build an industrial plant in Camaçari, in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador. Now, BYD plans to expand the production capacity of its factory to meet a demand that appears to be even greater than initially projected.
The Camaçari plant, which will occupy an area of 330 thousand square meters, was scheduled to generate around 10 thousand direct and indirect jobs. With the expansion of investment, this number should grow significantly, consolidating Bahia as a important production center for electric and hybrid vehicles in Brazil.

Bahia: The new Brazilian Silicon Valley?
In addition to expanding production capacity, BYD is committed to investing in new technologies in partnership with the government of Bahia. The region, which is already being nicknamed the “Bahian Silicon Valley”, can become a cutting-edge technology hub, focusing on the production of electric vehicles and the development of innovative solutions for the automotive industry.
The State Secretary for Economic Development, Angelo Almeida (PSB), confirmed to Portal A Tarde that production of the first BYD vehicles in Bahia is expected to begin in 2025. According to him, the expansion of the project has already been approved internally by the company, and studies indicate the need to increase production capacity beyond what was initially planned.
“BYD is already a reality. By 2025, we should have cars on the market produced in Bahia. The new thing about BYD is the possibility of expanding the project that has already been announced and is underway. In other words, the company has approved this plant in Bahia and, based on studies that have already been carried out, everything indicates that they will have to expand production capacity beyond what was planned. This is a good sign,” said Almeida.
