Leak in BR distributor

The oil spill caused by a leak in the BR Distribuidora pump caused a moment of distress in the region.

This past Saturday (19) an oil leak at one of the pumps at BR Distribuidora, which was privatized by the federal government in 2019, caused a disturbance near the REGAP – Refinaria Ministro Gabriel Passos, in Betim. According to the complaint of Sindipetro/MG on Sunday (20), at least 100 liters of oil spilled into the Pintado stream and walked towards the Ibirité lagoon.

BR Distribuidora alleges that at least 300 liters of oil spilled

BR Distribuidora rebuts that only 300 liters of oil were spilled. The incident happened during a diesel oil pumping operation at the Betim terminal (TEBET).

According to the union, the oil leak that reached the Pintadas stream, contaminated the watercourse that runs through the REGAP area. The union also says that the volume of oil spilled by BR Distribuidora corresponds to more than 3 times the fuel that is loaded by a tank truck.

Since the oil spill, a team from Petrobras, which is active in Regap's safety, environment and health sector, has acted in the region to contain the oil spill.

“Around 6am there was a leak from a pump seal. BR Distribuidora is not together with the Ministro Gabriel Passos Refinery, it is close. The oil crossed, fell into the Pintado stream, which runs through the Regap, and was felt in the Ibirité lagoon. Petrobras makes the contingency to ensure that the oil does not reach the lagoon. There is still no measurement to know if it has reached the lagoon and the situation is still not fully under control. If it reaches the lagoon, the oil will reach the Paraopeba River, which would be the biggest problem”, reported the general coordinator of Sindipetro, Alexandre Finamori.
