'The sea is also theirs' campaign aims to attract new talent and make work on vessels more welcoming for women

The offshore giants Altera&Ocyan, Aker Solutions, Equinor, Ocyan, SBM Offshore, Schlumberger, Subsea7 and TotalEnergies, in addition to the IBP (Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas), launched together yesterday (27) the sectoral campaign “The sea is also theirs” , an initiative that aims to increase equal opportunities for female professionals and the well-being of the female public who work aboard platforms and rigs in the oil industry in Brazil.

The movement also seeks to encourage other women to enter this strategic segment for the Brazilian economy. The campaign has a single platform, which can be accessed, using this link .

“The sea is also theirs” was inspired by research commissioned from the Ipsos Institute with women who work offshore in various companies in the sector.

“The study made a diagnosis about what they think and the result was so rich that we thought it was important to give visibility and share the information with the entire industry to create a collective movement to contribute to guaranteeing psychological safety and equal opportunities, in addition to to promote the attraction and selection of new female talents in this area of activity”, contextualizes Nir Lander, Vice President of People and Management at Ocyan – “We realized that it would be necessary to continue in a joint movement and join forces if we wanted to go further, for this campaign is permanently open to new companies interested in participating in this cause”, he adds.

34% of the women interviewed said that by working offshore, they can inspire other women to undertake this type of activity

The survey to which the executive refers brings important data, 90% of the women interviewed found it essential to create campaigns and actions to publicize the relevance of the theme of gender equality; 87% of them asked for the creation of incentive programs for hiring women in the sector and at least 34% said that by working offshore, they can inspire other women to carry out this type of activity. It was based on numbers like these that an exclusive website was created on the subject with three main focuses: content, opportunities and inspiration – it will be a meeting point, a place to search for information, job positions and sharing stories.

The IBP today has a Diversity Commission with periodic meetings to discuss and promote initiatives on the subject, such as this one.

“This initiative aims to encourage debate and shed light on equal opportunities in the offshore environment. The passage of women through operations is important for career advancement within companies. We hope that the portal will be an environment to share stories and inspire actions that lead to changes in the O&G sector”, comments Cristina Pinho, Corporate Executive Director of IBP.

Norwegian Equinor says encouraging diversity in the oil and gas sector is essential

For Ana Serrano, Senior Vice President, Subsurface, Oil Technology & Exploration at Equinor, encouraging diversity in the oil and gas sector is essential.

“At Equinor, we believe that diversity spurs innovation and creativity, two elements we consider vital to shaping the future of energy. Therefore, we have been working to attract and motivate more women for leadership positions in the company and to increase the number of female employees offshore. I am sure that “The sea is also theirs” will play a very important role in this journey towards gender equality”, comments the executive.

Other oil companies such as TotalEnergies and Altera&Ocyan also embrace the cause of women in offshore

“This initiative is very much in line with TotalEnergies' guidelines to promote the diversity of our talents as a crucial factor for our competitiveness, our capacity for innovation and our attractiveness. Respect for others is one of our fundamental values. Cultivating an inclusive work environment, respecting the differences of each person and using this richness to drive performance and innovation, are principles that guide us on a daily basis”, reiterates Eduarda Pina, Director of Business, Development and Geoscience at the company .

“Our commitment to gender equality is present throughout the human resources process and is part of our culture. We want to attract and especially provide career development opportunities for these female talents. Today, in the Altera&Ocyan joint venture, 18% are women, out of a total workforce of just over 300 members. We have a road ahead of us and this sectorial movement only reinforces our responsibility in relation to this cause”, endorses Carolina Almeida, People manager at Altera&Ocyan.

Oil and gas multinationals Subsea 7 and Schlumberger highlight the importance of female representation

“Being a partner in the campaign – The Sea is Also Theirs – is a great honor for Subsea 7. We have been investing in increasing the number of women in offshore positions so that we can have more and more diverse perspectives and collaboration at different levels. Women are increasingly conquering oceans of opportunities, bringing their broad perspective, their voice and their actions to transform the job market and Subsea 7 hopes to collaborate actively to promote this platform of such value”, celebrates Alessandra Nogueira, Director of HR at Subsea 7.

Anna Paula Lougon, Director of Technology Brazil at Schlumberger emphasizes the importance of female representation.

“The advancement of women's representation in the oil and gas sector is noticeable, but we still need to increase their insertion in this market. Representativeness is essential to deal with all the challenges to be faced by the industry”, highlights the executive.

Aker Solutions and SBM Offshore in Brazil point out that the initiative has a very rich and necessary objective

Jaqueline Fonseca, HR Director at SBM Offshore in Brazil, points out that the initiative has a very rich and necessary objective, which is to facilitate the connection of women with opportunities in large companies in the market.

“Seeing women conquering space in an environment that is historically and still predominantly male is a source of great pride for me as a professional, but also as a woman working in the energy, oil and gas industry. We have a lot to learn, barriers that we need to break and taboos that we will have to break, but no inclusion process is different. It requires strength and strength is something that no woman lacks! That's why we at SBM Offshore make a point of embracing the cause and dedicating our energy to inclusion and diversity,” she points out.

Aker Solutions is another company that joined the campaign. “This task force is a necessary initiative and meets our strategic objectives to continue building a more diverse and inclusive company, promoting opportunities for the insertion of women in the energy market”, emphasizes Andreia Maciel, VP of Human Resources at Aker Solutions
