ONS, National Electric System Operator, presented a strategy to preserve the Furnas reservoir and UHE Mascarenhas de Moraes

ONS, National Electric System Operator, presented a proposal to operate the Furnas and Mascarenhas de Moraes hydroelectric plants, with the objective of reducing the rate of decline in storage capacity by 2020. According to the recommendations of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the proposal also foresees the gradual restoration of the power plant reservoirs from the beginning of the rainy season.

On September 24th, at the fourth meeting of the working group to assess the conditions of the project's reservoirs, the ONS strategy was announced regarding the operation of the plants, which considered the multiple use of water. The operator believes that by November, the operating height of the plant can be maintained at around 2 meters, which will help to restore the reservoir more quickly in the future.

The WG is supervised and coordinated by the National Water Agency, MME, Ministry of Tourism and Infrastructure, ONS, National Electric Energy Agency, Furnas, Municipal Association of Lago de Furnas, State Councilors of Minas Gerais and various representative civil society institutions.

Furnas:

The Furnas Hydroelectric Plant was the first plant built by the Company, from which it inherited its name. The dam is located in the middle course of the Rio Grande, in the stretch called โ€œCorredeiras das Furnasโ€, between the municipalities of Sรฃo Josรฉ da Barra and Sรฃo Joรฃo Batista do Glรณria, in Minas Gerais. It has 1216 MW of installed power.

Mascarenhas Moraes:

The history of Usina Mascarenhas de Moraes, formerly known as Peixoto, dates back to 1947, ten years before the founding of FURNAS, when Companhia Paulista de Forรงa e Luz (CPFL) saw its generation capacity threatened with exhaustion. Its capacity is 476 MW.
