New electric motor produced in Portugal promises to revolutionize the automotive market. The new engine works both as an electric and hybrid engine.

New news is getting the automotive sector excited. It is the announcement of the start of production of a new electric motor manufactured in Portugal. HORSE, the automotive solutions division of Renault, has started production of a new compact engine at its factory in Aveiro, Portugal. In this article we will understand why this new electric engine could change the electric market.

New HORSE engine delivers up to 66 horsepower

The new electric motor produced in Portugal was developed for applications in full hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, offering 49 kW (66 hp) and 212 Nm (21,6 kgfm) of torque. In all-electric mode, it allows the vehicles to reach speeds of up to 130 km/h.

The new engine was developed to operate in conjunction with HORSE's HR12, HR16 and HR18 series internal combustion engines. Its configuration allows installation between the combustion engine and the transmission, supporting two operating modes, being fully electric and hybrid.

According to Patrice Haettel, CEO of Horse, the new electric motor produced in Portugal reinforces the company's commitment to delivering efficient propulsion systems using the latest technologies. With its compact design and the ability to operate in all-electric mode, this powerful and efficient new engine is ideal for various types of hybrid vehicles. Once again, HORSE demonstrates its expertise as an ideal partner for its customers on their electrification journeys.

Understand HORSE's objective with its new electric motor

In electric mode, the electric motor produced in Portugal directly drives the vehicle's wheels. In hybrid mode, the new engine works in conjunction with the internal combustion engine, contributing to the system's energy efficiency. During deceleration, the engine acts as a generator, transforming electrical energy into energy stored in the battery.

To make production of the new engine viable, the Aveiro plant received investments in four new production lines, allowing the production of up to 160 units per year. One of the technologies implemented is a three-head winding machine, developed to optimize engine core assembly.

HORSE said the new facilities and technologies were developed to meet the growing demand for hybrid and electric propulsion systems, in line with changes in the global automotive market. Each production line was designed for specific steps, such as machining of engine components (housing, rotor shaft and magnets) and final assembly.

The strategy reinforces the company’s position as a leading player in the electrified propulsion sector, offering versatile solutions to meet the demands of OEMs and end consumers. With advanced design, impressive performance and efficient production, the new electric motor produced in Portugal promises to redefine the standards of hybrid and plug-in vehicles in the global market.

Subsidiary plans from Renault to the Brazilian market

In September, HORSE announced a new investment of R$200 million to nationalize the production of engine heads at its plant in São José dos Pinhais (PR).

This investment reinforces the company's commitment to expanding its production chain in Brazil, focusing on 100% national production of the 1.3 turbo HR13 engine, which began in November 2024.

This new production line will be responsible for producing 210 cylinder heads per year, using a gravity casting process that provides greater efficiency and high quality standards. HORSE also expects to create 60 new jobs by 2026 with the full operation of the line.
