The inauguration marks a significant advance for sustainability and energy transition in the Amazon
New Fortress Energy (NFE) Brazil celebrated the inauguration of its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in Baía do Marajó, in Barcarena, Pará, in an event that brought together government figures from various levels. This milestone, reached on February 28, 2024, is seen as a crucial step towards reducing carbon emissions in the region, with the potential to reduce air pollution by up to 30% and establish the area as an example of environmental preservation. and transition to cleaner energy.
The project, which required an investment of R$300 million and employed 70% local labor, stands out for its regasification capacity of up to 15 million cubic meters per day, accounting for 22% of Brazil's natural gas consumption. in 2022.
Infrastructure and its impact
The arrival of the FRSU Celsius ship, directly from Singapore, marked the last phase before the inauguration of the terminal. This floating storage and regasification unit has a remarkable size, comparable to almost six Olympic swimming pools, and is essential for processing the gas that will feed the region. The strategic location of the terminal allows it not only to meet the needs of Pará and the Amazon, but also to enable the transport of LNG to more remote areas, in need of a safe and sustainable source of energy.

Hydro Alunorte, the main consumer in the region, will replace the use of fuel oil with natural gas, predicting a reduction in local CO2 emissions of around 700 thousand tons annually. This movement reinforces the role of LNG as a key fuel in the energy transition.
Future expansion and community benefits
The terminal will also serve a natural gas thermoelectric plant under construction by NFE, with 25% of the project already completed and expected to open in July 2025. Representing an additional investment of R$2.5 billion, this plant is another component of the vision of the NFE to promote sustainable development and economic opportunities in the region.
Leandro Cunha, general director of NFE Brasil, highlights the importance of the terminal for Pará and Brazil, stating that “Our first terminal in the country is a great achievement for everyone. We have been investing since 2021, with construction in Pará and Santa Catarina. We are sure that the LNG Terminal in Barcarena will open up new possibilities for the region, in addition to generating opportunities and jobs.”
