New Fortress Energy opens Terminal Gás Sul in SC with an investment of R$500 million, aimed at supplying natural gas, generating jobs and income in the region.
The inauguration of the South Gas Terminal marked a new milestone for the southern region of Brazil. Located in Santa Catarina, the New Fortress Energy (NFE) Brazil represented a significant investment of around R$500 million. The inauguration of the South Gas Terminal generated great expectations in the region and promises to boost the local economy.
O new gas terminal represents a strategic advance for the energy sector in Brazil. O liquefied natural gas regasification project brings with it the promise of diversifying the country's energy matrix. The inauguration of the gas terminal It is an important step towards sustainability and regional economic development, opening doors to new employment and income opportunities.
Expansion of the first Gás Sul Terminal in the southern region of Brazil
Located just 46km from the city of Joinville and approximately 180km from the capital Florianópolis, the South gas terminal It is an undertaking of great relevance for the region. With an investment of R$500 million, it became the first regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the South region and the eighth in operation in the country.

The South Gas Terminal already has a contract signed with TBG (Brazilian Carrier Bolivia-Brazil Gas Pipeline) for the supply of natural gas, enabling its use as a supply option for the demand of thermoelectric plants in the South, Southeast and Center-West regions. Furthermore, the venture will support the growth of industries such as ceramics, metal mechanics and glass, distributing natural gas later to consumers.
FOR Leandro Cunha, general director of NFE Brazil, South Gas Terminal It is essential to guarantee security in gas supply, as well as diversification in the offer for consumers. Furthermore, the Terminal will significantly contribute to meeting the potential demand for new industries in the region, which will result in job and income generation for the local population.
The connection of the TGS with the Bolivia-Brazil Gas Pipeline represents a strategic opportunity to expand the supply of natural gas to the South, Southeast and Center-West regions, meeting existing industrial demand and promising prospects for increased demand, which ensures the energy security of the country. As stated by the general director of NFE Brasil, Leandro, this interconnection is extremely important for the economic and energy development of the region.
O South Gas Terminal connects to a region that faces natural gas supply restrictions and has more than 3,5 GW of existing plants that lack firm gas supplies or long-term contracts (PPAs). A Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) Winter, 277 meters long, is the gas processing unit responsible for operating in the TGS.
FSRU Winter has the capacity to store 138 thousand m³ of LNG, equivalent to 83 million m³ of natural gas, and regasify up to 15 million m³ per day. The vessel, sub-chartered from Petrobras, has 35 crew members from six different countries on board. From September 2024, the charter will be made directly from ENERGOS, shipowner and owner of the FSRU.
O South Gas Terminal, from NFE in Brazil, represents the company's second project in the country. With an investment of R$300 million, the inauguration of the LNG import terminal in Baía do Marajó, in Barcarena (PA), took place in February. This terminal will serve two thermoelectric plants powered by natural gas, currently under construction by NFE, with investments estimated at R$7,0 billion and the first phase expected to open in 2025.
Operating on FSRU type vessels is globally recognized as one of the safest for the environment and nearby communities. With growing concerns about climate change, natural gas is emerging as the ideal source for a transition towards a low-carbon market, as highlighted by experts.
