“Incentivized” dismissal process covers several sectors and could generate an impact of R$386 million by June 2025
A São Paulo Metropolitan Train Company (CPTM) started a process of mass dismissal , which will affect up to 4.241 employees across its five operating lines. The plan, titled Incentive Dismissal Program (PDI), started this Tuesday (15) and will run until June 2025, with a total cost forecast of up to R $ million 386 . All sectors of the company will be affected, security agents a machinists e maintenance technicians, according to diariodostrilhos.
The impact of layoffs in the railway sector
According to a document from CPTM itself, the shutdown process will be carried out in four phases, covering the entire period from November 2024 to June 2025. This movement is part of a strategy of Government of São Paulo to privatization of the company, which should be completed by 2026. Lines such as 11, 12 and 13 are scheduled to go to auction in early 2025.
The shutdowns involve long-time employees, many of whom have dedicated decades to rail transport since the founding of CPTM in 1992. Although the PDI offers a financial bonus, the impact emotional e professional journey in the lives of these workers is a concern that the plan does not address. After all, it is not just the pocket that feels the change.

An uncertain scenario for the future of CPTM
With the imminence of privatization and concession of lines, workers face a scenario of uncertainty. The line 7-Ruby, for example, has already been granted and will be assumed by Tic Trains in January 2025. After the completion of this shutdown process, CPTM, which had 5.567 employees in 2023, its staff will be limited to just over 1,3 employees. And these numbers could shrink even further with the privatization of the line 10-Turquoise on the horizon.
In addition, the company will have to deal with the operational and administrative challenges arising from the drastic reduction in staff . How will this affect the operation of the trains that so many people in São Paulo use every day?
The financial and emotional burden of layoffs
O PDI brings financial advantages to those who opt for voluntary work, increasing the severance pay based on length of service and base salary. However, many workers, especially those who have over 20 years of service, may have difficulty getting back into the job market.
This is one of the biggest mass layoffs faced by the company, and the estimated total cost of R $ million 386 also includes line employees 7-Ruby.
However, beyond the numbers and bonuses, there is a strategic concern with the effects mental and emotional for those who dedicated a good part of their careers to improving public transport in São Paulo.
